So some of you may remember my last thread about the leaking sump, that was eventually fixed. Unrelated or not however now I have an engine light appear on the dash.

It only seems to happen on long journeys when I go over 80-90mph. The first time the light came on I switched the engine off and on and it went away. This time it has stayed on. The engine temp guage also went down to C but I've checked the coolant level and its fine, and now that works again (Probably just needs a new sensor).

I've messaged my local Fiat garage to see what they say. Has anyone ever experienced a problem like this?

edit: Forgot to say the car drives as normal since the light has come on. Unlike my old punto which went into limp mode!

Hi,
petrol / or diesel ?,
any other work done lately.. servicing??,

charlie,

Check error code first of all. Everything else is just guessing.

Definitely check error codes first using OBDII adaptor from eBay
Any recommendations on a scanner to buy? I just googled it and found one for £4 on Amazon but seems too cheap lol. I have no idea what I'm looking for exactly!
varesecrazy - Its a 1.3 M-jet diesel. Last serviced by the guy who owned it in january so I wouldn't trust it too much and think I'll get it serviced soon. I know Fiat will charge a lot but is it worth getting it done by themselves? Recently had a new oil change/oil filter fitted so thats one thing they won;t have to do.
lou5590 - Not sure what they are tbf, are they cheap to replace?

P.S if I was to take the car to Fiat would they know whether or not the timing chain has been replaced? Because the guy who sold it to me said he changed it but like I say after these problems I cannot trust that he has, and its due a change if it hasn't been done. (70k miles)

Update on the vehicle, the light has now gone out and everything seems fine again. It definitely seems to be something to do with driving at high speeds for a long period of time on dual carriage ways.

Avoid the cheap cables, the guy who made multiecuscan says a lot of the cheap ones won't work properly.

I'd take it to an independant garage, much cheaper for the same work so long as you find a garage you can trust. Having said that can you always trust a dealer?

Doubt they'd be able to tell you if the chain has been changed or not, probably best to get it done anyway.

I just remembered I had random warning lights and temperature gauge problems on my GP, I did some reading and someone suggested it could be a dodgy battery, the car was 6 years old with the original battery still fitted. New battery solved the problem. So perhaps it could be bad battery or alternator?

Try the Torque Pro app for OBDII if you have android, see the app description for recommendations on which adaptor to buy, might be worth spending a bit more. Otherwise perhaps http://www.multiecuscan.net/. Some readers come with software. I would recommended getting one that can reset fault codes not just read them.

Timing chain design life is something like 160,000 miles unless it is making noise, mine has done 110,000 miles and no problem so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi,
the chain design life IS LONG..however they can break without warning -causing LOTS of damage..,
your call entirely.

code readers = most will help with getting a code from when that light comes on,

IF you are servicing more than 1 FIAT/ alfa then it's worth setting up MultiECUScan,
as it'll do the work of a £100 scanner for @ £30 in cables.( free version)

couple of issues with this, basically there is no need to change the chain on a 1.3mjet until 200k miles, that said varesecrazy is right they have broken early and caused damage but they have sacrificial rockers to avoid total engine destruction, having been changed is no guarantee and some have broken on new cars so don't rush to get it replaced just because.

the question I have is why did the previous owner feel the need to change the chain as it was far from due? he is either lying in which case assume the service he performed was also imaginary, or the chain snapped leading to some engine damage which might explain the faults you're experiencing now

Best thing you could do is get a full and thorough service performed as good oil is essential to the chain and tappets
