hey guys i'm new here,

I brought my fiat grande punto 1.4 8v a couple of months ago and i'm looking into getting a new air filter.

Can i just buy the air filter cone and attach it direct or do i need to buy something different? looking for the cheapest option haha

Thanks :)

Cone filters require removal of the stock airbox, and need to be attached to the side of the engine bay then tubed to the throttle body - they also suffer badly from heatsoak if not fitted correctly.

Basically, if you want a cheap filter, you need an OE panel filter.

ahh okay sweet :) do you have a link for one of them? what kind of price are we looking at and are they easy to fit?

I'll get a link up the next time I'm on the PC :)

Prices'll probably range from about £5 for a cheap as chips filter, £10 for a Bosch paper filter, and £30 for a reusable cotton filter.

They're the easiest thing in the world to fit - the front of the airbox unbolts with 6 small (10mm, I think) bolts, and the air filter is housed in there. Five minutes tops for a swap.

sweet man! i'll have a look once youve sent me the link :) thanks a lot :) do you know any other ways of upping the performance of my car? like exhaust systems and stuff?

No problem mate :)

I've got a 1.4 8V myself, so I can tell you with confidence that you could spend a lot of money on the engine and get very little extra performance: with it being naturally aspirated you wouldn't see much extra power from a full straight-through exhaust system; a Pipercross filter would sound better and perhaps improve throttle response, but only a little; more agressive camshafts are avaliable, but I can't imagine you'd see a massive power increase changing the timings on an 8-valve; plus, insurers can be a bit tetchy when it comes to engine mods.

I'm sorry to say it, but if you want more power, I'd sell your car and buy a 1.4 16-valve, a 1.6 M-Jet or a 1.4 T-Jet instead. You'd be saving money :)

I bought an air filter yesterday from Halfords £9.28. I have a 1.9 diesel not sure if that makes a difference in price but I doubt if its much anyway.

As for making your car look better, check out people's threads for some inspiration - I've fitted things like fog lights and wheels, small stuff that make a huge difference :)
