Ok where do I start. Had new clutch put in now gearbox is leaking oil and hard to get into gear makes a noise like something is spinning inside the engine bay (plastic bag) the noise goes when take foot off accelerator but not when drop the clutch, daughter now says she has to double clutch to get any gears. Any help or suggestions would be great fully received.

It is a 1.2 8 valve the noise is like it's got something trapped and it's whirling in the engine bay but stops when taking foot off the accerator but not if you push in the clutch really strange one

The passenger side gearbox on my 2002 8v punto failed completely. Made noise and vibrations transmit through the body shell. Could the gearbox have dropped a little making it hard to go into gear by straining the selector cables? I picked up a second hand mount very cheaply from a scrap yard. Doesn't sound like the clutch change went very well?

After being in the motor trade as a Diesel Engineer for 35 years it's not a noise I have come across before although anything diesel is a easy fix I find petrol engines a little more challenging did the clutch myself so I know that is right my main concern is if it's the gearbox itself.

When was the clutch replaced, and by whom ?
Where is the oil leak, and how bad. ?

Te replace the clutch means removal of the gearbox, which usually means disturbing the drive shaft oil seals. This I guess could be the cause of your leak.

Or quite possibly the oil your'e seeing is spillage from removing the drive shafts.

However, double clutching to get gears is not good.
Not sure if the 1.2 has a cable clutch or hydraulic, if it's a cable clutch, then usually these are self adjusting these days.
If it's hydraulic, then the slave cylinder may require a re-bleed after being allowed to expand the piston when the tension was removed.

As for the clutch it's self, it could be faulty.
It's usually rare, but i've replaced a few over the years only to find one or two had faulty pressure plates.

Removal of the gearbox, could also require some disturbance of the exhaust, which in turn may disturb the heat shield.
A buzzing heat shield gives off a very strange noise.

I guess depending on how long since the clutch was replaced, I'd be taking it back for another look.

I have read about the gearboxes failing on mk2s but not witnessed this myself.

One great feature of the modern small Fiat boxes is the oil doesn't usually escape when the drive shafts are removed. :)
