Hi all,

I recently bought a 56 plate punto grande from a local garage, visually the car is sound, with good low mileage. The only problem being was a big gash in the front near side alloy, although i wasnt too worried as they're cheap enough to replace.

after the test drive i decided to go ahead with the purchase. I drove it on the motorway and instantly I could tell the wheel bearing was dying, I took it back to the garage who then replaced the wheel bearing and CV joint free of charge. I noticed they swapped around the bad alloy for the nearside rear. When returning home from the garage I tested it on the motorway to make sure it was all fixed, but when getting to motorway speeds the dash lit up like a christmas tree, with the ABS light Powersteering light and handbrake light all showing, although this didnt seem to be effecting the car in anyway its just annoying and worrying because the speedo dies and the digital display also shows EBD failure. This only happens when going motorway speeds, the rear tends to wobble and then the lights come on, has anyone else had this problem? or does anyone know the fix to it?

Im sorry if its already been posted, i just cant seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance :D

Is it too late to take it back to the garage again?

I could do, but hes saying its just because they've had the bearing out and "theres probably nothing we can do" however he said if you pay for the problem to be fixed, he'll reimburse me, and after it being in for a week for a wheel bearing, I'm trying to avoid that place like the plague.

Classic garage bull****. How can taking a wheel bearing otu effect the electrics so badly a week down the line?

Unless they get their arse in gear and sort it ASAP, personally I'd try and return the car for a refund, I know that's the last thing anyone wants to do with their shiny new car but if it's a lemon and the garage is already being funny with you at this stage it might end up being trouble in the long run :/

I couldn't agree more Jacob, get the car to the garage ASAP and demand a full refund the car is clearly a lemon and I would suggest you get it back to them and you get your hard earner cash back and find another one mate. If you don't I fear that it is just going to be one thing after another with it.

Agree with the take it back but absent that I'd be worried about the wobble - there's a wheel or bearing issue (could that be your bad wheel you refer to?). If my limited understanding is right the EBD issue can be linked to ABS assuming your GP has that which could therefore be linked to the bad rear wheel/wobble.

Other causes seem to be bad earths and water in the ECU both of which can afflict GPs unfortunately

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will pop by shortly to give you better thoughts

Also have you had it plugged into a scanner - there should be a fault registered

thanks for your responses guys, but I think the best course of action is to just get my money back! has anyone had to do this and are they legally obliged to refund me?

they have obviously put the wheel bearing in wrong and or damaged the abs pickup
my monies on bearing fault probably caused by being hammered in this will cause all dashboard issues on a grande or most of them anyway
your back end feels wrong because obviously the wheel and or tyre is badly out of shape

i would get a second opinion with wheel tyre combo just to strengthen your case if its dangerous before running in demanding refunds

Hang on, a wheel bearing and an abs sensor don't make the whole car a lemon. I'm assuming they have replaced a front wheel bearing but now you have a problem at the rear. I'd get the wheel spun up on a balancing machine and look for a buckle.

As said, the warnings are probably just an abs sensor. They. Probably damaged it changing the bearing. It's a cheap enough fix.

Agree with the point on bad earthing - just had the same symptoms (dashboard lighting up like Xmas tree, various fault messages, including EBD and ABS) which led to the car shutting down altogether. Turned out it was a faulty earthing strip (connects from neutral battery lead onto gearbox).

As soon as earthing was fixed, everything came back to normal...

Too bad the original poster did not unveil the final episode...

In addition to all proposal in the thread here is my candidate: they replaced the CV joint, they MAY have installed the wrong one. Some have the sonic wheel on the bearing, other have it on the joint itself...
