Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can help me out, im having a right nightmare with my car over the last week or so.

Firstly as i was driving along & the car would just cut out & sometimes 'save' itself, other times you would have to restart the car completely by putting the key to stop & restarting. that would be fine until you come to a set of traffic lights and cause a tail back because the immobiliser light comes on, and then it refuses to start!
Eventually the light on the dash went out and restarted thankfully!

The car is not running at its best & I believe it may be misfiring so a possible misfire could be the cause of the car cutting out, maybe?

I also thought that maybe there was more air getting into the engine than it needed, had a check around the engine bay and found that one of the pipes that connects to the air box (the smaller of the two) i believe to be a vacuum pipe, was perished quite alot, i managed to find a fuel pipe at work that fitted so im currently using that as a temporary fix, Car seemed to get better, not cutting out as much as it would however still cutting out, at no particular times though, the engine could be cold, warm, high or low revs in no particular gear.

now yesterday i went to work, after the car started fine in the morning, parked it up after no cutting out and thought all was ok, got back to the car and it refused to start because the immobiliser padlock light came up on the dash, took the battery clamps off and left it for a couple of hours, went back to the car after reading a few different threads on here, basically managed to get it home after jump starting the car because the battery ended up dying on me.

now today i have the immobiliser light on again and its not working at all!!ive checked 4 earth points including ecu earth under the air box, i had cleaned up the throttle body butterfly valve for the cutting out issue, used a jump lead to connect from the battery to a part of the engine to rule out a bad earth but ive now come to the end of what i believe i can do!

I now have the following lights on the dash
- Dualdrive electric power steering failiure (red)
- Inefficient EBD electronic braking distributor (red) (amber)
- Car protection system failiure (amber)

Im thinking maybe the battery has low voltage and is making the ECU have a right hissy fit And giving me all these electronic gremlins, Im hoping it is anyway, although ive put an ammeter on the battery & its showing over 13volts, ive had the car over 3 years and a half years, ive never had a new battery the car is a 58 plate 1.2 grande punto so battery could potentially be 6 years old..

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

okay so ive tried changing the battery & nothing.. Still the car & padlock, any ideas? anyone..?

Hi,

what did the battery say for voltage before you fitted it? ( often they are LOW from storage)

have you checked that the battery is getting correct charge from alternator ( @ 14 volts with engine running).https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/342212-gp-1-2-not-starting-any-ideas.html

from here on in you will / may need tools..!!, : - {
there is a fair chance of a wiring issue.. either a poor earth ( ground) or cruddy connections ( water in fusebox..??),

Charlie, Andy thanks for your replies,

I had checked the earths and they seemed to be okay, no oxidising green stuff all over them so i presume they was okay.. I did put a jump lead from neg terminal to a part of the engine, not the green to green bit that is mentioned in your electrical gremlin thread Andy, However would this not of bypassed the earths anyway?

I wasnt able to check the Fuse box yet as before i read these posts I had been towed down to the nearest Fiat garage, they put it on the diagnostics machine, wasnt able to get the codes from them ( they all speak German ) however i did get out of them that it was showing the engine tempreture as minus 40 degrees, Not good I presume!

Hopefully find out tomorrow what is wrong with it, Thanks for the replies guys!

Jack.

well that sounds like a bad earth OR a faulty coolent sensor or bad MAP sensor

given the other symptoms i'd be more inclined to aim at the earth cables......

there is a earth to the chassis of the car doing the body computer and one to the gear box the cable often fractures in the crimp near the chassis leg

the green to green bit (battery neg to engine) is probably the most important check you can make ;)
