Would anyone recommend a product like STP Engine Flush before an oil change? Looks promising but always weary. Use it on the old oil before changing to the new oil. Going for an filter and oil change at the weekend. Any insightful comments?

Thing is when you drain oil you never get it all out so that means you will be leaving some flush in the engine?? Is it enough to contaminate the new oil? I don't know.

That was my initial thought, think I'll just change the oil the good old fashioned way, even if a little of the old oil would mix with the new stuff.

I dont like the idea of it dislodging something thats happily stuck out of the way doing no damage and giving it potential to move about...

if your oil changes have been a bit slack in terms of timing my advice would be do a change this week (new oil and filter) then do it again in about 1000 miles time the fresh oil (and modern oils are full of detergents) then do a change again

Yeah, that and a few people have commented that they now have an oil leak due to the older oil being free to move out of the gap due to no restriction....

That sounds like a very good idea. Wouldn't need to change the filter again would I after the 1000 miles?

I have used engine flushes on many cars & have not noticed anything untoward occur afterwards.
I have used Wynn's oil flush on my go 1.2, with no bad side effects.
The most interesting oil flush I carried out was on an morris ital 1.7l, a curly piece of swarf about 2 inches in length came out in the oil!
I have just bought some valvoline engine flush to use on my next oil change :)

No problems with the car a 1.2 Gp since it did the first1000 miles after it had been flushed out. Mind you the garage i bought it from said it had just been serviced but the oil was clean but it did not look like the filter had been changed at all so we did a full service on it

Don't touch oil flush with a badge pole.

If you're concerned about it all then change oil, then change again 2k later, this will be enough to flush most crud out.

Oil flush is pointless if the engine is clean, which is should be if regular oil changes are adhered to, and can cause costly damage if removing dislodged crud and blocking somewhere else as above.

I'll just give it a normal change at the weekend and in the process check the old oil...

Only reason I'm asking is I never received a service history or anything with the car (private seller) and when I changed the spark plugs last week I had the shocking discovery of finding out the lack of servicing on it.

The filter looks like it has been on for much more than a year, buying oil and doing a good job of a oil and filter change.

Thanks for the input guys and gals :)

i usually leave my car to drain for a good 45 mins after about 30 mins i often slop about 500 ml of new fresh oil in the filler It helps drag the last of the dregs out....

some would see it as a waste of fresh oil but most containers are 4l now so you wont get another change out of it......

Good tip!

Yeah, ordered a 4 litre container of Castrol 5w40 for £28 off amazon which I thought was a great price!
