Hi Folks,

The GP 1.9 Mjet that I brought back on the weekend, only has one key, I think its the emergency key, (slim key without buttons).

What is the easiest and most cost effect - and best.. way to end up with remote key, plus a spare??

On my Abarth Sei, which I bought without any keys, in fact the steering wheel was locked. I changed the lockset and the ECU and the code system.

Do I have to go through the same process with this car??

Its a 2007 Mjet Sporting.

Cheers

Best and easiest way is a new key from dealer. £200 ish, cheapest is a different question though ;)

There is also a guy in the Manchester area who is able to program keyfobs for just over half the price of a stealer. He advertises on Ebay and requires the car for an hour or two as he has to plug into the car to get the code in order to program a new key. This person also includes a new keyfob in the price. The only downside is you have to drive to him, but he claims he can do the work in a fraction of the time it takes a stealer to do it.

Humour

But requires the car for an hour or two

Dealer only needs it for half hour normally.

@Most Easterly Pandas Are you trying to be facetious?

How many keys have you had programmed by a stealer? Of these how many keys have you had done by a dealer in a half an hour visit? No? Well then.....

In my experience you would be lucky to have this service done in a week!!! Irrespective of how long it "actually" takes do the job. In my experience that's how Fiat deals with their customers, so yes a 2hr job is significantly quicker than what actually happens in the real world.

Humour

P.S. Jonfiat, link PM'd. ;)

Facetious, not at all, was a very good point I was making.

Likewise, how many have you had a main dealer do that have taken in excess of 2 hours

Dealers want fast turn arounds, once you're done they can get on with the next customer and be making more money. Simple really.

It sounded like it  perhaps where you live the stealer is efficient and punctual. Not in my experience though.

I've had 3 keys programmed in two different Fiat dealers. Two were for Alfa Romeo cars and one for a Fiat car. In all three cases I had to chase them to get the work done and in all three cases it took them over a week, despite the extortionate amount of money they charge for the priviledge.

did i read that right? you once bought a car without its keys? you must be nuttier than squirrel sh!t my friend ;-)

Had a similar situation ......contacted Fiat stealer and around £308 for a new remote key. Not much cheaper for a manual one. Went to CJS Locksmith in Partick yesterday and he cut and "cloned" another manual key for me that opens the doors manually and starts the car all for £50.

Some locksmith can do it for you but they also need the car for about 15 minutes just to check the cloning works. Had a chat with the guy and Timpsons used to have the gear to do the cloning but most have stopped as there was to much comeback. Think best thing is to search the internet and see who is around your area and then call them to make 100% sure they can do it.

Thanks all,

I bought a s/hand flip key via fleabay and hope to pay about £10 for a new keyblade cut to match my car. I'll figure out the coding next. I am investigating a Fiat version of VCDS, (which I've got for my Passat) which I reckon will enable me to code the remote fob.

Cannot afford a King's ransom, so an looking to do this as cheaply as poss'.

If anyone knows where to get the gear, please PM me.

Cheers

Jon :)
