Hi folks, my gearshift has become very ..... Sloppy/stiff/vague. Chap in a garage had a look for free and thinks the cable ends are goosed, and says it a common fault? He phoned a supplier of the genuine part and 1 cable was £200 and the other was £100. Does anyone know where I can get them cheaper, or a set of 2nd hand ones. Or if you've had this happen any tips for fitting as I'm happy to fit myself. Car is a 06 1.9 sporting 6 speed.

Before spending any money I would lubricate the pivot bolt on top of the gear change turret as this seizes over time with the symptoms you describe, you can get to it from above. If the cables were broken you would not get reverse or depending on which cable forward gears. The cables can give similar symptoms in very cold (water in cable freezes) conditions. I would definitely lubricate the pivot bolt first as this is a very common problem (done loads, alfas had same issue)

Sprayed some grease in there and problem solved, cheers for the help!

Hi, can you please give more details? I'd appreciate if you point the exact part you lubricated.

Thanks.
