I have just purchased a Grande Punto (well, it broke after purchase, but I'll be getting it back in this next couple of days) and I was just wondering how easy it was to add an auxiliary port to the car?
I've seen on eBay that you can purchase plugs that go into the back of the stereo and you can play a phone or MP3 player.

Four questions:

  • Could someone please tell me if the thing I've link is in fact that correct part?
  • Is the Aux setting accessed by pressing "CD" twice?
  • Is it easy to feed the cable through to the glove box or down to the could holder area?
  • Is there an easy way to have the aux-in port in a place where it's not hanging anywhere (e.g. drill a hole somewhere and have it held in place)?

Cheers guys,
-Jake!

Hi Jake,

There's a few options in terms of what you can do, all of them have the same effect and allow you to play audio from a 3.5mm/RCA device.

if it's one of these aux to 3.5mm jack cables your talking about.

Then yes it's relatively easy to route into the glove box, you wont have to remove any screws as you can pull the cable through from the rear of stereo unit straight into the glove box.

There is a few other options though, you could buy a chassis mounted 3.5mm socket and have it mounted for instance on the dash (on one of the blanks next to the hazard lights) or even down near the cupholders near the gear stick.

Simply drill a hole and screw this onto it : google "3.5mm chassis socket"

It can be a headache though as you need to do a bit of soldering work (which i dont reccomend doing in the car under any circumstances, unless your experienced. melted plastic and seats do occur frequently with amateurs)

This involves striping the ends off the 3.5mm jack on the cable and binding the two grounds together then hook up the L+R in the right places, it's pretty simple but having enamel coated wires in these cheap cables makes it a nightmare as you need to burn it off.

If you decide to go down this route, let me know if i can help out any more.

Here you go
All the bits you need to complete your aux input with no soldering and mucking about
All parts are available on ebay for less than £20
The 3.5 socket does come out of the bracket if you want to mount it in the dash
The yellow plug goes in the back of your hu
The two 3.5 plugs join together using the 3.5 to 3.5 socket adaptor.

Thanks for the reply mate!

Just wondering, with 3.5mm chassis socket, I've noticed that most of them stick out fairly far (obviously so that the jack can go into it easily).

Are there any RCA to 3.5mm Female jacks that have a similar design? If I could do this whole thing with just the simple adapters, I'd love to have the hole coming out of one of the dummy buttons on the dash, like you suggested, but have it in the button, not instead of it.

These look really like what I'm after.

What are the names of these so I can search for the correct thing on ebay?

Cheers! :D

Panel mount 3.5 socket [and there is a rca version] and one that has a usb on the front as well
fiat aux cable
3.5 to 3.5 adaptor

That sounds awesome! Thanks!

Last question: I don't have my car to check this out, but where would the socket go on the dash?

Sorry to do a quick bump here, but which one of these would be better; the blue one or the yellow one?
