205/55R16 is too big for the GP.. the ratio would have been off and the speedometer would then be inaccurate. Apart from that, a 55 profile would increase the ride height by a further 10mm

... So far I've looked at hankook ventus v12, kumho ku39 and [deleted] or uniroyal rain sport 3's ...

The short-list is good (exc. T1-R!)
Maybe think: Asymmetric v Directional?
Longevity? – not too good with a sports/performance tyre.

Ive been running kumho ku39's all round now for a while and cant rate them enough. Great in the dry, superb in the wet, always had full trust in them.
Due for my fronts changing now and ordering myself a pair again.
£64.86 a tyre on blackcircles so with delivery only £141.22 to your door.

Thats very reasonable, hadnt seen them that cheap! (y)

Can you explain that further?
Given the speedo is already inaccurate by design - & any speedo variation with 205/55R16 would only improve speedo accuracy. 10mm is equivalent to 5mm of treadwear.

i took the tyre size that came from factory on my 15" steel rims, then inputted that into tyre size calculators and went for the one with the closest ratio.
if you put the factory wheels side by side with the rims and tyres i have bought, you will not see any difference between the two in height.
To be honest, 5mm of treadwear in my mind says that you'll be due for a tyre change.

I see your reasoning - but then you used 175/65R15 (the smallest dia/circ of the within spec options) as your reference tyre.
It may have been more appropriate to use 205/45R17 as the reference tyre – i.e. close to the mean or median.
Your 205/50R16 may have min dia/circ variation with a 175/65R15 – but it doesn’t have to be that exacting
(only within a reasonable tolerance envelope) … & it’s come with an awful cost penalty.
5mm of treadwear leaves 2 or 3mm (whichever to-one’s-mind) of usable tread-depth remaining.
To my mind your over-spending & under-using on tyres.

i'm probably both overspending and underusing, however i tend to spend a bit more than i'm supposed to on brakes, tyres, oil changes and general maintenance as i'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to maintenance.
Must be a mindset from work as i'm an aircraft mechanic by day lol :)

I know what you mean.
I worked in procurement for many years – so tend to view spares on a `Would the design team & lab team approve of this part?’
I also do some SE flying - & the aaib accident reports make interesting reading.

I ran my GP on 185/65R15 – that are the top within-spec limit for dia. & revs/ml.
But had I known at the time 205/55R16 are so close (+1%) then I may have considered that fit.
I’d be interested to know if anyone runs 205/55R16 tyres?

let me know how they perform, it is always good to hear reviews for tyres on the same car as I drive for future reference, mine is getting a continental contact 3 tomorrow so should be a bit better ride
