Technical Modified Scuttle Drain

Technical Modified Scuttle Drain

Got one from the local main dealer (Fiat) €10 all in, cheaper than that alfa guy!

Hi, it poured down a couple of days ago, car screeched on start up, repeated again whilst driving and now idles at 1000rpm and not the normal 800rpm. I suspect it's something linked to the alternator?

Did anyone get a picture of this part fitted? I've ordered it, just want to make sure I put it in correctly.

Didn't see the point in a new thread.

Thanks

Not a great picture but you can see the scuttle drain behind the blue cable pointing towards the passenger side of the car.

Hate to add to an old thread, but does this apply to the 1.3? I bought one of these ages ago and could never figure it out. That, and water doesn't seem to drain through any pipe, and nowhere near the alternator

@Cadabena, yes fella it does. Its not so much engine related but chassis/platform related due to where the drain holes are located on the scuttle panel floor (in front of the firewall) on the GP platform. To prove the case, the instructions to mount at 90 degrees rotation is to direct the draining water away from essential items such as the altenator, but still this redirection simply moves the draining water to some other engine component. In my case the drivers side is now dripping on the steering rack and the passenger side is dripping on the gear selector counter balance weight on the gearbox side.

This was the second job I did after buying mine. Easy enough to do.

On reflection I would have been happier with measuring the hole diameter in the scuttle with a micrometer, then finding a suitable hose to put in there so instead of 2 inches of drainage pipe, I could use 10-15 inches of however long it needs to be to release the water below the firewall and under the car, but I CBA to do it again so it stays for now.

Humour

Sorry to revive an old thread I'm 2016 :D could I get a bit more detail on how to install this? As I can see where the old one is but how do I actually remove the old one and do I need a hose clamp or similar to secure it? Thanks in advance!

the "flange" on the top end should be enough to let it "hang" down from the scuttle,
Andy's comment about niching / scoring it is because at years old it may be too firm ( rigid) to squeeze through the scuttle hole.. but the new one should squish enough to pass up through the hole(y)

So basically pull the old one out and squeeze the new one through the whole and make it sit nicely? Sorry I must sound like a right doughnut ?

yes then make sure it dangles towards the passenger side,

if you look closely at it the top has a ridge mid point at the ridge it has a cut / groove all the way round this groove is where the metal sits in

you might find it helps to lube it up a bit with a bit of car shampoo so it slips through easier though it really doesnt need it (if its cold out dunk it in a bit of hot water for a minute to soften the rubber)

Ordered a couple of these to fit at the weekend. Just to clarify are they fitted from underneath? All secure and dandy? Not worth taking the scuttle off and popping them in from the top?

Thanks.

Yes just squash the old (small) one and pull it out. Then you'll see that they have a groove around the top which holds the pipe into the scuttle. Takes a bit of fiddling to do but usually only a few minute job. Then test there are no leaks and water runs out of the way when done

A bit of lubrication (car shampoo) helped me also.
