Hi all.
I just want to know if all puntos have this annoying rattle somewhere under the steering wheel, but only while driving on a bumpy road. It sounds like dropping a spring on the floor - the best way to describe ;p my father said that it could be possible that puntos are not that much sound isolated as other cars. So I am asking here, punto drivers might know this the best. :)
Btw it's not the drop links, and the sound doesn't come from outside but from inside the car.

Yeah I get it too when 'off road' (I mean like the grass car parks at Goodwood festival of speed, not the amazon). I think its just that the dash isn't as solidly bolted in as it would be on a vw for example.

Oh thanks. I think this is the only bad thing I can say about punto. Well I was hoping that there is a solution for this :)

Hi again. I am not sure if this is only on my punto or on others too but it's really annoying.
I am talking about the strange noise when turning the steering left and right, (explanation in video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYa5U526Nok&feature=youtube_gdata_player )

The source of the sound is from (see attachment).

The similar noise appears when driving on a bumpy road.

So my question is if this is a problem that could be fixed or is this normal for a punto and there is nothing to fix?

Thanks, Jan.

Actually it makes noise when stationary( only when i turn the steering from one side to the other) and when driving straight.
The drop links were changed not so long ago, but this noise is different (video) and it's coming from inside of the car.

Oh and maybe this should help. I can feel it on the steering wheel too. It feels like when I turn the steering wheel from stationary or from one side to the other like it grabs the wheels with a bit of a delay.

Does it sound like this?

Mine has a "cosmetic noise" coming from the power steering motor that causes no problems, other than the boinging noise.

@ Andy Monty, No the springs feel ok.

@Captain Slaphead yes the sound is similar but only when driving on a bumpy road. Made another video, this time I was driving off-road. See video: ( ) btw I am holding the phone under the steering wheel.

@Ziggy122
It could be what you are saying. Do you know what the costs of repairing or swapping with a new one would be?

Thank everyone for help, I appreciate this :)

Sounds different to mine - I get (what to me is) a distinct spring/sproing type noise, when parked up or at low speeds (perhaps up to 10mph). Noise appears to come from the underside of the steering column, just above your knees. If you've ever sat on a old chair with some dodgy springs under the seat, it's a similar noise to that.

Fiat Dealership garage checked it thoroughly for me (even found a failed gearbox oil seal), and reported that aside from the noise, it doesn't affect the car in any other way and it doesn't appear to do anything other than make the noise. Their advice was that as the cost of a new part was £400, and it's doing nothing other than causing a boinging noise, I may want to live it it.

And I'm living with it. For now.

Captain Slaphead well the noise on mine comes when driving slow or fast, but only on a bumpy road and without turning the steering wheel. There is no noise when parked.

Like you said, I need to get used to it. But it's really annoying...

And one other thing I forgot to mention and is probably related to this. A while ago when I was parking I heard a hard knock when turning the steering, since this knock the wheels were pulling to the right if I wasn't holding the steering straight. So I turned the wheels completely to the left a couple of times and then I suddenly heard the one loud knock again, then the wheels weren't pulling to the right anymore. Could this be related to the problem I'm having now?
Thanks

I'd not had that myself; only read on this forum about others who say it - and it's usually top-mounts.

You might need to bite the bullet and take the car to a garage for a proper check over - or get it off the ground and shove your head around for a look.

Check the universal joint at the base of the steering column. Mine was loose and caused a rattle at 3000 miles from brand new.
It was fixed under warranty and the tech said it's a common problem. Mine is a 2009 1.2

Captain Slaphead my top mounts were changed and this noise is different.

Yes you are right, I will take the car to the garage this week.

But first I'll try and check what chricol advised.
Thanks.

Well I went to the mechanic to get the car checked. And yes, there were some of the screws in loose, so the steering column was rattling and making this noises. He said it could lead to a serious steering mechanism breakage.
As if this wasnt enaugh, he allso had to change both of the front Ball joints, which were really bad - you could hear the noise when cornering at low speed and the steering wheel was vibrating.
So the car is now much funnier to drive, with no rattling or knocking or clunking noises at all. :D
