Hi all , at long last I bought a t-jet 08 plate 1.4 , I have had a search but couldn't find a cure , the reverse gear crunches sometimes does anyone else know what causes it , we have five Citroen nemo vans at work and are based on the gp and they all do it too .....every other gear is fine , clutch feels good , any ideas ? Really sorry btw if its been covered to death this topic .

Yeah its a weird problem , just can't put my finger on it tbh , does it quite bad one time then the next its as quiet as a mouse lol

Bloody hell , now that is going to the extreme , its a real bad thing for it to do and there must be a reason that it crunches but I ain't got a clue , can't be the gear cables cos if they were out of adjustment it would do it all the time , not the clutch cos its fine in every other gear , just one of lifes mysteries :(

It's a reverse gear, 99% of cars will do this if it's engaged to quickly, mainly because of the gear cog setup. Loads of info on it here for other models.

Either need to double declutch, engage another gear before hand (not sure if reverse has a synchro) or put up with it, it's nothing to major.

Its totally normal on the t-jet as there is no syncro on reverse. When I first got mine it would crunch every time I selected reverse, now I have got in the habit of selecting 1st before reverse. It took a couple of weeks to get the nack but it goes in silently every time now.

It's just 'one of those things' with the Tjet- a combination of slightly more inertia in the 'box and the self-adjusting clutch which keeps the input shaft spinning for a fraction too long after the pedal is depressed compared to others. It's just a matter of waiting a tiny bit longer between pressing the clutch pedal down and selecting reverse.

Failing that, it's the usual case of the floor mat being caught under the pedal and preventing full travel/clutch release.

Cheers for your replies everyone , I tried the going from first gear then to reverse gear today and not had a problem , also tried it without doing that and it crunched so from now on its first then reverse so massive thanks for the tip for sorting the problem :)

I have driven 1000km in my Punto Grande 08 and it has done it 3 times. Each time after I have started from neutral. I go back to N or into first and try again and it clicks straight into R. :) Such a lovely car to drive in semi auto especially.:worship:

As reverse gear is only ever selected when stationary, they don't have a syncromesh, so some clunking is normal.
However i wouldn't expect grinding unless the clutch is a little lazy.

Simple ker-lunk is normal.

Im a driving instructor, have a 1.4 active sport 10 reg and no problems with the pupils finding reverse except that the clutch isnt down far enough.

However recently I had someone doing the driving test in their own 1.2 08 reg Grande Punto and it just wouldnt go into reverse at all, even with the clutch down fully so I told the guy to turn the engine off, then select reverse and leaving it in gear with the clutch down and then start it again and it was fine to reverse then.
Hadnt known about putting it in first and then reverse though- anyway the guy failed his test on other things but I can tell him to try it out if he comes back again.

Irish.

Wouldn't starting the car in gear carry some points in a driving test. ?

When i was a kid, the first thing we were taught was to make a point to the examiner that your handbrake was on, you were out of gear and your mirrors were adjusted, before you even considered starting the car.

If you cant select reverse without switching the engine off and then back on again
I'd seriously be considering having the clutch inspected, as its probably dragging

It could also be a poorly adjuster cable or air in the hydraulics causing a similar setup - causing the clutch to drag due to improper disengagement

Ziggy
