Hi my grande punto 1.9 08 can be a right pain to start sometimes and I am really getting sick of it.

It can start fine some days but others it will take 3 or 4 attempts to start. The annoying thing is that I had it in the garage last month to get it fixed and they replaced the glow plugs, fuel filter they had an auto electrician to check it over and it all seemed fine. Its also had numerous fuel treatments too, but recently it has went back to its old ways.

Also i must add it doesn't start any better on a warm day or when the car has been running. I cannot seem to find the common factor for each time it doesn't start.

Anyone had the same problem or know what it might need doing to it? I really need it sorting ! thanks

id be removing egr valve to see if its full of crap, and to check the electronic solenoid is moving. mine struggled to start when egr wasnt working right.

I had a similar problem with my 56 reg, everyday on the very first time I would start it it would start then cut out but I would start it again and it was fine and hasn't don't it for ages! I am having a few problems with my Punto it's starting to annoy me!

I took mine to the mechanic and he put it on a diagnostic machine and nothing came back wrong!

curious to know with your egr valves getting stuffed what grade of oil you use, using a 10w40 will have ash in it when burnt leaving a residue on surfaces, using a 5w30 grade has low ash when burnt with less deposits less.:D

Well I haven't had the car that long. Less than 10 month and I haven't personally changed the oil yet so I wouldn't know. I will bare in mind the type of oil you suggest though

Had an intermittent start problem on my punto. Turned out to be the crank sensor. Cheap and easy to fix so maybe worth a look.

I always thought the battery was often the problem on the 1.9 Mjet?

I had a 57 plate and changed the battery to a higher capacity jobbie and it started much better. Original batteries don't have enough cold cranking amps from what I remember.

I have also got a problem trying to start my GP - Sometimes it will take 6-10 times to start but it makes a horrible noise sometimes when it tries to starts and then sometimes it will start first time - Had my Starter Motor changed and it seems to be the same if not worse than the old one - so clearly wasnt a Starter Motor issue?? Mine has also been on a Diagnostic Machine and came back with no problems - Getting very annoying now

its a common fault on these cars. I have this problem too. I've just learnt to live with it. I've had my battery checked and thats fine... when the time comes to place the battery Ill get a more powerful one.
but I would say to check the AGR valve

 The grade/thickness of oil has no relation to it's ash content.

EGR's clog whether you use the fanciest of oils or some cheap Wilco muck. Low ash oil is predominantly for DPF models, although Fiat recommend the 5w30 WR across the diesel range anyway.

we use mobil 5w -30 fe grade or 5w-30 esp grade on 80% of cars after 2006 ,low ash does make a difference, still have the older 15w-40 and 10w-40 for earlier cars.oils do make a difference in performance engine cleaning removes sludge and better mpg when done regularly.

Cheers, im a novice with technical details so comments like that are much appreciated!

mine also has a habit of doing it in front of lots of people haha
good job you can spin the wheels and get away quickly though! it is a pain in the rear though!

so ive cleaned the erg valve today, took ages to get back on car! seems to be starting up better there doesnt seem to be as much of a crack/snap noise after the car has turned over. Might get new high performance battery to see if that improves the situation as mentioned before the standard batteries are well terrible.
