Tis a bit of a shambles they still haven't fixed it, as Dave has said it's been an issue for umpteen years.

Most manufacturer's have E-PAS, made by several different companies, and they all have issues at some time or another. Whatever happens though, you'll never lose steering ability- just that it'll be heavy (like it used to be before the days of power steering).

Re: The BBC WATCHDOG THREAD

Had the problem (intermitently) on the 56reg 1.4 Active Sport I had.
But the 59reg TJet hasn't dropped the power steering once in 2 1/2yrs.

Will watch with interest, but as has said. Not generally a very objective program or presentation team.

It's the steering column not the rack that's the issue.

End of the day the idea of the programme is to create hysteria and make the programme look good, watchdog is well
past its sell by date and a new programme is needed to give a balanced view. The presenters dont give anyone the
chance to reply before firing another question at them.

8pm on friday....no chance, spongebob is on channel 606:-)

To be fair, vehicles with PAS have slightly altered steering geometry to those without (less castor if I remember correctly) which means if the PAS fails, the steering is naturally heavier (plus the drag from moving the fluid in the rack in vehicles with hydraulic PAS). Couple that to wider tyres and you've got yourself a full upper body work-out!

It's 8pm tonight (Thursday), so you can both tune in

Will watch with interest & see what Fiat have to say if they can get a word in edgeways. Tbh i was suprised after the outcry over Mini's steering systems that Fiat managed to avoid Watchdog. I know that many systems can fail but if the frozen alternator debarcle was anything to go by it'll be how Fiat UK have dealt with rectifying the problem when the steering has failed that'll be the problem - they're usually very inconsistent and it seems whether you get something fixed or not depends on who you speak to, which is poor.
