I have a '58 plate Grande Punto 1.4t-jet sport...

A few weeks ago the orange warning ! appeared on my dash. (the one between the fuel & temp gauges meaning General issues) Had it checked out by a mech no faults found, light goes out.

last week this 1st light reappears but this time along with the other orange ! (the one in the centre of the speedo) but this time the following message flashes up on the screen :
Hill Holder Unavailable ... ESP Unavailable ... Fuel Cut Off Unavailable
took it back to garage to read diagnostics this brought up 3 codes:
  1. u0422 EMC
  2. u1715 ABS
  3. 36947 BCM
also a lack of power but no faults found!:confused:
i was told to carry on using the car...

Whilst driving today the second orange ! showed up again this time the screen flashed up: hill holder & esp unavailable (nothing about fuel cut off and no power loss!!)

now ive also been getting a burning smell while using blowers above half way (climate control):(

no one has a clue whats wrong with it... anyone got any ideas??????
:cry::cry:

H.E.L.P!!

yep 36947 ... but no one is able to bring up a reason for it, fiat say 'its nothing, carry on' so ive been taking it to my mech who sorts our other cars. we cant figure out whats wrong :(
sorry i should of said, the burning smell is only after the lights have gone out :s
i hope its not the wiring burning causing bad contacts.... £££...££££££ lol

thanks for the other info ill see what i can dig up!! :)

Fuel cut off unavailable

[Bumped from 500 forum]

I'm resurrecting this thread because this morning I had this message on my GP sporting 1.6 diesel (just over two years old now, had it from new).

I had been waiting for the next thing to go wrong and I was not disappointed (more things have gone wrong with this car than I care to mention).

The error message cleared when I removed the key and restarted but the cruise control had been disabled (which I only found out about as I was driving to work). Restarting in the car park at work a couple of times got things back in sync, cruise control now working again and no more message about fuel cut off.

However, the last time I dismissed a warning message as a "one off", my power steering failed and my car was off the road for several days awaiting parts from Italy (hint: never buy a foreign car that doesn't have a parts warehouse in the UK).

So, is this fuel cut off message something I should be talking to my dealer about NOW or do I wait until it comes on again and I can't get to work? Or the airport for my holiday, soon?

Actually I realise I should have posted this as a new thread so please don't respond here!

Apologies!

Hi Guys,

I'd like to resurrect this thread as i seem to be having the same problem, my cars a 58 plate T-Jet Grande Punto.

The car sometimes doesn't start, and what i have to do is open the bonnet and disconnect the battery for a few seconds to get the engine to start.

Then sometimes (but not all the time) i get the three lights as mentioned below, also i get the ABS light and power steering light come up. One second they're there and the next they've gone, the problems seem to be electrical so i'm going to replace the battery to see if this works. I did post this on a thread sometime ago and someone replied to try this, unfortunately ive just been putting it off but I've had enough now.

Only once have i not been able to start the car. I had to call out the RAC who came and ran a diagnostics test on the car to see why it wouldn't start, let's just say the list of codes is bought up is too long to post. He cleared the codes from the BCM and it worked fine for a few weeks, but now the problem is back...

The RAC guy who came rang some other motor electrical engineer when he was with me, who seemed to be aware of an issue with the Grande Puntos BCM? and that it was temperamental at times? Has anyone else had any trouble with their BCM, and if so what did you do?

Thanks for your help!

I replaced my battery very recebtly abd I am still getting the ABS, Hill Holder etc message, it's quite infrequent and very random but turning ignition off and on sorts it. No other issues with power etc that I've noticed. Possibly an alternator issue? At 82000 miles I suspect it will require replacement at some point.

I'll replace the battery and see how that goes, fingers crossed!

Got a bosch 5 year battery last year and this problem popped up.

Same problem at the moment.
Had MOT last month, guy failed me, diagnosted and front right wheel speed sensor was intermittantly sending out bad signals.
Cleared fault, passed MOT

Message on dash
ABS disconnect, then connect
HILL HOLDER Unavailable
Then another message, but I've forgotten what it was ESR or something... disconnected then connect.

£40 for new sensor and installation from Mobile diagnostics guy.
Not done it yet as doesn't affect the performance of car.

Let me know how you get on dude.

Thanks for all the help!

Replaced the battery with one from a local stockist. On my way to the stockist the lights come up on the dash again, and the hill holder/ABS disconnect warning lights as well, and the power steering. Swapped the battery over, and when i turned the car on i still had the warning lights.

Drove the car the next day and the only warning light i had up was the engine management light, this stayed on throughout the day and i restarted the engine several times.

Came to the car the day after that and all was fine, and I've had no further problems for the last five days, car has started every time without any warning lights! So touch wood all appears to be fine now.

Just so everyone knows the battery i replaced from the car was the one it's had since it was manufactured...

Again, thanks for all your help!

Guys afraid I'm having to reopen this one again. I originally opened a thread on this in 2012 so you can see how intermittent the issue is.

After the battery replacement the cars worked fine all year up until the last few weeks.

The car seems to start fine but then all the lights and warning messages pop up, all the dials drop down to zero and then when I Rev the engine they all kick back in to were they should be. It's only a handful of times I have issues starting it up, but all I do is either take the key out and start again or unplug the battery for a few mins. Takes care of the start up issue but not the dial/dash lights.

I took some photos of the dash, you'll see on one that all the dials are at zero when I fact I'm doing at least 70 on the M1!!

It's so draining because it will work fine one day n then the next its a nightmare.

Not sure we're to go from here, hoping someone can help, would be appreciated!

Yes.. it's probably the alternator, that's why it started giving problems as soon as the temps dropped. ..it was probably the alernator all along but the new, properly charged battery got rid of the symptoms until it got drained..

Our electrician at work is gonna give the alternator a test to see what voltage its getting, so I'll let you know asap.

So what do we think, fully charge the battery I have now and replace the alternator?

If the alternator is the problem then yes.. that would be the way.
You should also check that all the connections are ok /not corroded.

Right, just had the electrician test it and it's giving off 14v. Could the alternator still be at fault?

What connections should I be checking? All of them around the engine bay or specific ones?

The alternator can still be at fault.
Just recently I saw an alternator that would charge perfectly for hours at a time.. then nothing then charge again.. and so on.

Do you only use the car for short trips? that can cause the battery to drain ...and the alternator can't keep up because it's not charging for enough time.

First you should charge the battery, also put a voltmeter on the battery in the morning before changing to see if it drops below 9v while cranking... that would mean the battery is going (but only after fully charging it)

Clean all the battery grounds to the motor and to the chassis.... That would cause a lot of problems among them: bad charging, also slower cranking.

Thanks for this!

I'll give the battery a good charge then, whilst its doing that it'll give me some time to get the cleaning done!

I'll monitor it to see if this cures the issue, if not it looks like I'll be replacing the alternator.

Can you recommend an alternator, or will any 'off the shelf' one do from a local auto wholesaler?
