Right my car is stuck in second gear, the guy from the rac looked under the bonnet and said "its all connected this end so it'll be the gearbox cable"

He escorted me home, but before i take it to a garage i just need a little more info...

Is the cable the same as the linkage?

Is it a big job to replace the cable?

How much should i be looking at paying to get it fixed?

Are there any guides to replacing them?

Cheers in advance.

Might be worth getting the actual gearbox itself checked, i believe the gearboxes on the 1.4 are woeful, which includes the TJet.

My mates TJet is still in Stone Acre Fiat waiting on a gearbox replacement, it's been in for about 4 weeks now, they ordered the wrong gearbox.

His problems were very similar to yours, but his was stuck in 3rd Gear.

Pretty sure its the cable, my clutch has been showing signs of wear which i read can cause the cable to go.

How can the hydraulically-operated clutch affect the gearcables? Are you sure you're not confusing it with a cable-operated clutch?

just had a look at my workshop cd it looks a right ball ache of a job......

If there's no silencers under the gearlever box, it's a piece of ****- one screw and a few clips and you can see the cables, IIRC.

TBH I'd start at the gearbox-end first and pop the cables off the linkage and see if they've snapped internally, plus you can then manually select the gears by directly moving the 'box linkage and confirm the 'box is ok. Usually the gearlever will feel really sloppy in one axis of movement if it's a broken cable issue.

no i read on here when one members gear selector cable snapped, he was told that that can often be a sign that something else is wrong, and they specified a clutch thats on its way out as an example, which i think mine is!

I'm gonna get cracking on it this weekend with a bit of help, and yeah the stick moves forward backwards, but not side to side.

It's utter rubbish. There's no physical connection, other than the gearbox casing itself. Clutches wear over time and gearcables eventually snap over time... its inevitable, but not directly linked.

Sounds more like they were lubing him up for a proper shafting in the wallet.

right so i got under the car and found the culprit, it's a snapped forward/backward gear selector cable(could have been worse!)

just looking for the new cable online, does anyone know where i could pick one up for a decent price?

Right all sorted, picked the part up from fiat today, cost me £63, a tenner more than shop4parts, but i got it today rather than wait for delivery.

Cheers again "andy-monty" for emailing me the instructions! they come in real handy although they were so over complicated, ...its so much easier than it looked!

Took the gear stick assembly apart from inside the car first.

Jacked the car up on its side a put it on stands.

I took the exhaust off the rubber brackets and moved it over and out of the way, rather than take the whole exhaust off.

Unbolted the heat shield, that bends easily so that came off around the exhaust to give me access to the underneath of the gear stick.

Opened the gear stick box, popped the old cable off the linkage and pulled it out, popped the new one into the housing and onto the linkage, and fed it through to the engine bay.

Now the guide says you need to take out the battery, battery tray and other bits, but i can't see why, you can clearly see where the cable attaches to the linkage.

Took off the other end of the broken cable, and popped the new one into the bracket, and onto the linkage.

Put it all back together and result!

Hi I am new to the whole car thing as only been driving 8 months this morning the exact same thing happened to me when going from first to second freaked the crap out of me at the time is there a chance I can have some instructions on changing the gear linkage again up and down

Cheers Matt
