Engine Check Loss Of power 1.3 Mjet

Morning all, I wondered if anyone could help me. I have the Dynamic 75bhp 1.3 Multijet diesel GP. Recently, for no apparent reason the engine check light will come on and stay on whilst driving; usually if i am going up hill, or if Increase the revs. When this happens, the car suffers from a massive loss of power, and it seems as if the turbo cuts out - has anyone got any experience of this happening? The only way to rectify this is to stop the car and turn the car off and on 4 times to clear the fault! This is clearly not practical and potentially very dangerous!

Any advice?

Cheers

Chris

Re: Engine Check Loss Of power 1.3 Mjet

Sounds like its going into something called "limp home mode". Its ment to protect the engine from anymore damage... Well thats what the on board computer thinks it might just be a dodgy sensor.

I had it on my old corsa and it turned out to be the MAF sensor that caused it.

Fiat should clear the problem reported ( but they might charge you or if you have a friend that can do it who has the equipment) and if it comes back then they will probably have to order a new part.

Hopefully this helps

Next time it happens take it to the dealer if you can when its still showing the fault.
They can connect up their diagnostics and then get it booked in for further work if required.

Thanks Guys. If it was to be the MAF sensor/Air flow meter, do you have any idea what sort of cost it would be? My local Fiat main dealer want to charge £100 per hour just for diagnostics!!

MAF sensors are quite expensive (£125), you don't want to be changing that without knowing its at fault. However, it does sound like a dodgy sensor somewhere. Your best bet is to make it do it again, then get the fault codes read straight away. This way the garage will know from the code whats wrong

£100 per hours thats mental! I got mine done free at vauxhall but thats cause i know someone (when i had my old car). Otherwise they were going to charge just £40 to find out. Id shop around if i where you otherwise it sounds like its going to be a very expensive bill, try different fiat dealers.

I have no idea about cost but i do know that apparently vauxhall has exactly the same engine in their diesel corsa and their like a 1/3 of the price for parts that fiat charge.

Yes, worth a go. Mind you my Dad also has a GP and after a bad experience with said dealer, is now treated like royalty by the manager of the delaership, so I might do some name dropping! It is going in next week for the Steering rack recall as well, so maybe I'll be able to come to some arrnagement with them

Re: Engine Check Loss Of power 1.3 Mjet

had the same problem on my diesel panda .. in my case the waste gate had seized on the back of the turbo cos at around 3000rpm its should start to open but when its seized closed the pressure gets too high and the sensor lets you know at the same time putting the engine in to limp home mode .It will reset on start up but will trip again at 3000 rpm

Thames in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, I'm not sure of the exact hourly charge but i know it wasn't far shy of that figure.

Re: Engine Check Loss Of power 1.3 Mjet

Thought I'd give everyone an update - I had the dealer do some diagnostics at around £56, and they worked out that they needed to take my turbo off. This was around 2 hours labour, and worked out just shy of £200. However, it may well be covered on the warranty so that's a bit of a relief! The turbo has been taken out and they have decided i need a new one, just awaiting the 3rd year warranty people to come round and approve it before they commence work! Thanks for all your advice everyone.
