General Grande punto sporting M-jet 1.9 mpg economy

I get around 39-43 mpg when i travel to my office (around 16 mile roubd trip on a and b roads) when I visit branches I get around 47-55mpg on the motorway (latter figure is when I sit at 60 mph in 6th)

You want to drive from Stafford Park, past Hortonwood at peak times...jeeez...I can walk faster at 5 oclock...

Just cruched the numbers after checking past fuel receipts and it seems my trip computer reads upto 4mpg out...strange as it fluctuates between 2-4mpg too generous not constant at all?

Just filled up at the same garage, same fuel...trip computer told me I was getting 45.4mpg, whereas in reality I was averaging only 41.5mpg... So much for a remap improving economy, just buggers up your trip computer from what I can see....

I wonder why this is?

Ur right this has been reported before, by others with remaps - essentially a remap is aload of fueling tweaks. So this would kinda explain why... I know there is slightly more to a remap than fuel tweaks before people breath down my neck

Well I did my first long trip yesterday -

320 miles - Average 45.8 mpg indicated. Mostly at 80-85mph and about 25 mins worth of town driving + 45mins stop start on the motorway. (also about 6 patches of 50mph average speed camera zones - getting very prolific nowadays, just like the eternal 40mph limit on M25 where no problem is evident - am I sceptical of government/councils milking motorists for money - yes! :D)

So not bad all-in-all, mpg dropped noticeably on the return, I arrived at halfway point with 49mpg, tried not to vary the driving style but did notice I couldn't get quite the same instant mpg figures on the way back - maybe more uphill or wind direction? (trip was Swindon to East Kent - West to East)

Ok MPG I suppose, there are times when higher revs on seemingly flat roads seem more economical - 6th at 2k rpm giving about 5-10mpg less than 5th at 2.5k rpm. Not sure why unless turbo spool up is a factor?

I am wondering whether a remap would actually improve MPG despite having more power - I can see if I'm travelling at 80mpg+ the extra punch could help with wind resistance - do you need to modify other aspects of the car to have this? i.e. brakes, suspension etc. I do still bring the clutch in a bit heavily at the mo, may have to play with my driving position a tad! :)

My MPG is almost as p...y as yours. We both live in South Lanarkshire. Is there a connection other than the well known fact about our crap roads?

Can I just third that!!! I commute from Glasgow centre to East Kilbride and I average about 38mpg - 8 miles takes half an hour and that includes 3 or 4 miles at 50mph or above!

Had a trip up to Wythenshawe in Manchester and back on Wednesday.

178 miles and averaged 54.3 Lets take off 3 Mpg becoause of my re-map to satisfy the suspicious.

51Mpg, thats a mix of Motorway, A and B roads, just over 3 hours driving at or around the speed limits. I'll see if I can post up the pictures of the display from my phone over the weekend.

Jimbob has made an important discovery, I dont always stay in a high gear, what works for me is being able to keep the motor in its "zone" around 1,800 - 2,500 Rpm. Around 60 Mph in 6th on the Motorways and whatever gear I feel the car wants to run easy on A and B roads. In 6th the engine is running 2,100 Rpm at 70Mph.

That economy will do for me, its a Sporting not an Eco-tec (y)

I thought you said:-

"Anyhow this Economy thing does my head in, too many variables to be of any use, I only know what my car does and how to make it do it" :D

Have you checked how much your remap skews your mpg figure... Mine can be 4mpg out, I would imagine as your map is "richer" than mine it could be even further out?

Fair enough, I suggest you check back through the Posts in this Thread though, some would die for that sort of economy. But be mindful that the MJet engine is quite old now, and other manufacturers such as BMW with their latest 320d have only just stepped up their game in light of the "save the planet" lobby, the credit crunch and fuel cost rises. Lets hope the next gen 16valve diesels from Fiat give some a better perspective on things, after all, the now discontinued 8 valve MJet range are considerably cheaper than other "similar diesels", mine was only £9,500 2 years ago.

Edit :- also remember this is a 1.9 Sporting not a 1.9 Bluemotion / Eco warrior
Agreed. It is quite a nippy car and the figures are only a little disappointing. But I believe the rather larger Bravo diesel with similar performance produces better figures, so Fiat could perhaps improve the GP without too much effort.

Indeed I did say that.

3Mpg optimistic doing the tank-full to tankfull maths bud. (y)

Plus I get NO black smoke. :D

Yea the 8valver is an old lump, maybe the 16valve diesel will meet everyones expectations (y)

£40 fills it up and I get about 340 miles out of that. If I drove sensibly I'm sure I could get 400miles+ very easily...

Seems the remapped guys do get better economy - I filled up today just after the fuel warning light came on after a bad (= embarrassing) experience with the Panda 100hp, Fiat don't seem generous with their tanks! Trip was at 350 and that was 80% motorway 80mph-ish.

Seriously considering the remap now, if economy isn't affected (or is even better) and you get all that power with no other mods necessary it does look tempting! :D

And neither do I my good man.... :)

Aah but Mr Shroppy... it was you who said :-

I just wanted to make it clear that, richer or not, it still didnt smoke like a traction engine.. :D
