I might be talking bull here, but here's me guess.

Modern cars have lots of electronics, I have been told that I must wait for a couple of seconds for all the car's electronics to power up. So, next time you start the car, turn the key once, wait for a couple of seconds and then start the engine.

Second guess: Alternator problem? Have you had it checked?

Any mechanics on the forum who could help a bit more maybe? ;-)

I have tried turning it once wate for a cople of seconds then start it, but if anything its worse.... ticks over more.

And they checked all the electronics by plugging it into the diagnostics machine and having a general fiddle but they said that there wasent anything wrong they just updated the ECU and said ok see if this will do.

hmmmm

i also have thid problem, my localdealership replaced my starter motor apparently bt it has never made a blind bit of difference, 90% of the time it works fine, the other it jus makes a grinding noise and clicks about stupidly, sounds like the alignments out to me but untilll i get time off work to check it uot myself i dont know what to do, my local fiast garage are useless lol.

keepthe post going guys be interesed to see what anyone comes up with.

cheers- rob

mine does this,

but clangs

Needs a new steering rack. I've got mine booked in under warranty(y)

As for the derv, process of elimination. I'd change the fuel filter, prime it with some injector cleaner while you're at it.

Change the glow plugs after that

doing that you can rule out the fuel and plugs, so it has to be elctrical then.

Try using a remot start kit to bypass the ignition so you can see if its the switch or not.

sorry for not understanding this, but how does the steering rack help with the starting?

are you aware of the starter circuit operation on a GP?

no sorry dont know a gret deal about much of it, all i know is it makes odd noises wen trying to start, and that it often takes 3 attempts to get it started :(.
