Its in the manual for a reason - sure you can put something else in, but if anything goes wrong, then you know who to blame

Re: What oil to use

As purely a "top up" you can stick ANY synthetic oil in.... Whether it be for petrol OR diesel engines.

Wrong, no point, use the correct oil, Selenia. It saves complications if things go wrong.

Re: What oil to use

Yeah its really not worth it saving £3-4 on top up oil if it causes £100's of damage which it probably will if the DPF myth is true.

Rubbish. A 1/2 litre top up of ANY synthetic oil is good enough & CANNOT cause ANY damage. The molecules mix as they heat up. Remember your Physics/Chemistry lessons from 5 years ago Chris?

A turbodiesel requires a "thicker" (less viscosity) oil than a petrol engine, however, the turbo bearings ideally need a "thinner" oil than that used by a diesel (to avoid clogging the pipeways). There is not much common ground. So, perhaps you can see that it really does not matter a jot whether you use synthetic "turbo-diesel" oil or synthetic "petrol engine oil"!

I can assure you that using a very expensive low viscosity petrol engine oil (Mobil1 etc.) will transform your car instantly.

Yes I know I did an oil change after a year on my old GPS with mobil1 fully synth and I agree it transformed how the engine performed.

What I was getting at was you recommending "Any" fully synth oil not all of them are high quality......

It was a low quality fully synth oil that caused my Alfa's bottom end crankshaft shells premature ware and the knocking that created . Unfortunately I didn't see there was much difference between them.

Re: What oil to use

But the bottom line is that, UNDER WARRANTY you dont want to give FIAT a way out of a claim.

So... while under warranty stick with the manufacturers recommendations, after warranty its up to the owner.

Personally, as my GPS uses little or no oil I will stick with Selenia, for "top ups" if I need to and oil changes when the time comes.

Jeez over the period of time we are talking here why penny pinch? And yes this comes from me who moaned like stink at what I had to pay for my 2 litres of Diesel Selenia... £16.40!

Re: What oil to use

P.S. I notice GPS170 is in a remap thread too, I cant imagine any way of being so hurtful to my engine than skimping on oil quality, mixing blends and adding a re-map... how insensitive.
