Talking Creaking--FOUND IT

I have been searching for the dreaded creaking for nearly 2 months now, and its the DOOR LOCKS. How do i know well If you close and lock the doors then push down on the top edge of the door with one hand and gently lift by the door handle with the other hand you replicate the door movement as when the body flexes over bumps etc. You can hear the creaking noise coming from the striker/lock area. Spray the door seals first to eliminate them though. Now ive found it just got to sort it RING RING HELLO MR DEALER TYPE PERSON.

Re: Creaking--FOUND IT

You have to remove the door striker plates. On removing the striker plate you will see that the two captive nuts behind the plate are able to move to allow greater adjustment to the it. These are whwt make the noise!!! Get your hands on some copper grease and some spray lube, with a small paint brush. Copper grease around the captive nuts (Just shove it in really), then spray in some grease. Re-attatch the striker plate to them approx same position it came off. Check that the door open and closes freely making sure that the door does not stand out leaving a large gap. Go for a road test.
It may do it a few more times but will soon stop once the grease has worked in.

Or!!!

Take it to your main dealer and just use your warranty

Well done for finding the source of the noise. Personally, I wouldn't spray the door seals with anything because rubber is attacked by oils and solvents.

I have some silicone spray that is safe on rubber. As i temp measure to do the check you can use soapy water. Booked it in for 24th so hopefuly it will be sorted before we go to Ireland.

Re: Creaking--FOUND IT

UPDATE

Just been messing about with it and found the striker was rubbing on the latch so i repositioned the strikers into the centre of the latch slot and gave it a spray of WD40. Been for a test drive and went to the roughest road i could fine and its quiet as a mouse. It must have been the striker and lock moving against each other.

Drivers side window can cause this too, wind it down then a quick "up" on the winder button, takes up the play between the glass and the mechanism. Try it. Alternatively you could just push the window down when u dropped it a few inches. Mine moves about 5mm when I do this but there is NO rattle.

Yeah i know. The point of my post was to show how i narrowed it down to the door locks. Actually hearing the noise when you are standing outside the car is easier than when driving. I was convinced the noise was coming from the rear of the car (side panels/rear seat etc), its very desceptive how sound echos inside a car. No disrespect to you T.

Re: Creaking--FOUND IT

agree...had customers reporting noise from rear when it was infact the door locks.

2 quick tests;

1) wrap bit tape around striker plate & see if noise goes away.

2) drive on bumpy ground & open door, if noise stops its the door lock (safety here guys, private ground & wear seat belt)

With reference to my post "Warranty issue - Bodywork"

Having just read your post, I carried out test number 2 and guess what? No creaks from the nearside!

My dealer thought it was a bodyshop issue, now thanks to you, I can point them towards the right direction! No more time off work for me then!

High praise indeed

Re: Creaking--FOUND IT

sticking a bit of sellotape (so you cant see it) around striker plate is all thats needed.

Is this the way Fiat UK is advising its dealers to deal with the issue?
