| Re: which engine oil? I take it you didnt get an owners manual then / service guide /warenty book.. ask your dealer for them as you wont have a book to get stamped at service time.. my hand book says for Petrol engines: Synthetic Based oils GRADE 5W-40 Fiat 9.55535-m2Qualification original oil: Selenia K Oil for Diesel Engines: Synthetic Based oils GRADE 5W-40 Fiat 9.55535-N2Qualification original oil: Selenia WR and in the foot notes.. "If using non original SAE 5-W-40 Products, Oils with a minimum ACEA A3 Specifications por petrol Engines and ACEA B4 specifications for diesel engines are admitted; In this event top engine proformance is not guaranteed. Use of products with low-quality properties than ACEA A3 and ACEA B4 could cause damages to the engine that are not covered by teh warenty" hope thats of some use

| I bought some of the Selenia oil from my FIAT garage, but at £14 per litre I don't really want to be limited to that make. I cannot believe that another branded oil, that conforms to the specification laid down in the handbook, would do any harm to my engine, nor would it not give me full performance. T, sorry, sir T, what do you reckon? On the same topic, do I need fully synthetic, partially synthetic or just 'normal' oil? Mine's a GP Mjet 90 1.3, Jan 2007. The oil marker on my dipstick is halfway between min and max (no round thing on mine) so ideally I'd like to top it up a bit, but the 1 litre bottle I bought I keep for 'emergencies' in the boot, hence the need for a cheaper, quality brand which I can buy in 5 litre bottles! Anybody have any comments to make (apart from me being a skinflint!)?

Only trouble is, if you buy Mobil 1 (5W-40) in this country, it's as expensive as the Selenia that FIAT push! Maybe I'll look around for 5W-40 oil that matches the ACEA B4 spec and 229.1/229.3 too if possible. I still can't work out if it's supposed to be synthetic or not though. I gather that synthetic lasts longer (esp. with our GP 18,000 mile service intervals, this is important). In days of yore (1980's), when I used to do my own oil changes, it felt like water after 10,000 miles. No lubrication left to speak of at all.

| Re: which engine oil? not sure if this is relevent but on the break down prices on my GP's last service the print out for the cost and qty of oil was for shell Heliex motor oil

| Re: which engine oil?
That oil met MB229.3 ( coincidentally to the required ACEA B4) Mobil 1, *0w40* now on sale in the UK meets MB229.*5* Problem in using that while in warranty is that 0w40 is not the viscosity in the book. Although that too is now on sale in Calais and I will be bringing a couple of cans home this summer for the years oil changes. I think a full synthetic is going to be a lot better for the turbo bearings..... IMHO if its to ACEA B4 and 5w40 its ok. Really it has to be a full synthetic to get the 5w40 grade....... So theres no option other than full synthetic really (IMHO) as thats the viscosity in the handbook for the multijet. Regards
