Tyre / Alloy Question, need help by thursday lol

Right, here's my dilema.

I've been offered a really good deal on some alloys (Which you'll all get to see on thursday ).

Of course I've accepted this offer (from fiat) but have noticed something... The alloys i've bought are 225/45/R17 but the tyres on my car (which are brand new) are 205/45/R17's

I've been told by the guys at fiat that they can stretch the tyres to fit as i've just spent £240 on them, and there will be no problems and I'm getting it in writing that my warranty wont be affected.

In brief, can 205/45/R17 tyres fit on 225/45/R17 wheels safely?

Tom

lol sounds abit dodgy to me, maybe if you were puttin 205 tyres on 215 wheels then yes but a difference of 20mm sounds alot. but then again i'm no michellin man. lol

Re: Tyre / Alloy Question, need help by thursday lol

thanks lol, I've just checked on a tyre calculator and it gives possible tyre fittings one being:

Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference
---------- -------- ------------- ----------
205/45 R17 616 mm 1935 mm -2.84 %

Yes....from what I believe.
Taking 205 as a minimum, the maximum you can accomodate is actually 235, although 225 is the ideal limit. That assumes the load and speed ratings are maintained. I checked all this out when I replaced the tyres on my Jag before going oversize.

thanks for that, you've put my mind at ease, I suppose some of my alloy will be exposed now though.

Exposed alloys eh ???...... Your original tyres will fit the new alloys but probably wont look right, They will be 20mm wider (10mm each side) at the wheel than they are on the contact face so in effect they will appear to taper outwards. Any larger than 235 and you will have difficulty getting the bead to seal, it may still even fail under hard cornering at 225.

Re: Tyre / Alloy Question, need help by thursday lol

your right, but I'm doing the opposite.

205 tyres on a 225 alloy? so in effect a bit more exposed?

Thanks again
Tom

Thats it....... wider at the wheel and an exposed bead. Personally I think those in the pic look awful, they must be outside the fitting guidelines and are sure to attract the attention of plod but I dont think yours will look that bad, you will only be 10mm out on each side at the wheel.

Yep it's a lupo.

Stretched tyres are commonplace in the 'euro' tuning world.

Started on vag and spawned out, euro has had it's day on anything other than vag now imo.

I'll be interested to see how the tyres look, I've heard problems from vag owners that stretched tyres can develop cracks in the sidewalls over time, but this is extreme stretching. If you've done a deal with fiat alloys then I'm going to hazard a guess at black bravo wheels? Looks good in my head!

Get some pics up thursday
