Strut Top Bearing removal + Service / replacement & Front Spring replacement

First off this is a fairly complex task with the added hazard of having to remove the coil spring which is under a fair amount of tension so care should be taken.....<br />

Re: Strut Top Bearing removal + Service / replacement & Front Spring replacement

Thanks for a great writeup Andy. I've got a complete replacement shock second hand with springs loaded for front. I've watched the following video:

Makes it look pretty easy in terms of removing the strut itself. I guess it gets more complex once the spring and shock need to be replaced. But if i'm just replacing the entire thing, is it just matter f removing the top nut on the bulkhead and then removing the bolts where the strut connects to the leg and replacing it?

In terms of removing the top bulkhead nut, in the video he puts some kind of allen key in first and then the wrench over that. Is it that the allen key is to prevent the inner nut from spinning? Am i supposed to put the allen key and just use it for olding while turning the 18mm ring wrench?

Whats the symptoms of having to replace these?

My car makes some clunking noises when you turn the wheels and I've been advised it could be the top mount bearings.

Yes but whilst its in bits makes sense to put a new strut bearing on for 15-20 to save having to strip it down again in a few months time..

Its to hold the inner shock shaft still whilst you undo the 18mm nut you'll probably find a rusted hole in place of a hex hole if your car is a few years old though...

Does it make a noise like a busted hotel bed? get a mate to slowly rotate the steering wheel feel the spring carefully is it rotating smoothly or jumping in time to the noise if the later its time to replace the bearing

Re: Strut Top Bearing removal + Service / replacement & Front Spring replacement

Just going through the process of replacing shocks, springs and top mounts. The "plate" 55701796 that sits under the top nut is badly perished and cracked so needs changing too. I think this is probably the main cause of knocking and wandering.
Fiat want about 25 each for these but they can be had from Vauxhallsuperstore.co.uk for 8 each under same part number as fitted to corsa D. The top nuts can be bought from same place at 0.90 each under part number 13241765.

Cheers
Ben

Re: Strut Top Bearing removal + Service / replacement & Front Spring replacement

Please can someone confirm the correct Fiat p/n for the strut bearing, or maybe even better the Vauxhall /Opel p/n? From looking online at ePER it's 55703641, elsewhere I found another Fiat p/n 51780079 but I'm struggling to find the correct part on ebay. Looks like Vauxhallsuperstore.co.uk don't have them unfortunately.

I think this one is correct, but the suppliers are uncertain:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301968126271?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageNa me=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Edit - After a lot of messing around I found this, which I think must be the right part, it's FEBI 38390:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-FEBI-BILSTEIN-OE-QUALITY-FRONT-LEFT-OR-RIGHT-TOP-STRUT-MOUNTING-38390-/311489457398?hash=item488637ecf6:g:jZ4AAOSwnGJWT4e 0

Hopefully there's also a cheaper Vaux/Opel version :-)

Many thanks
