Police get new dispersal powers

Police have been granted new powers to break up gangs of people with cars gathering in Hull city centre.

The move follows complaints from residents and businesses about the anti-social use of cars by groups.

A dispersal order will give police extra powers to split groups who have or could cause alarm, distress, harassment or intimidation.

The order comes into force on Monday and will run until May 2009 on specific streets in the city centre.

They are Freetown Way, Charles Street, Ferensway, Spring Bank, Hall Street, Colonial Street, Park Street, St Stephens, West Street, King Edward Street, Bond Street and Albion Street.

Pc Alan Cowley, of Humberside Police, said: "The authorisation to disperse groups supports the existing powers police have to deal with offences.

"People breaching this dispersal order can even face arrest.

"It [the order] services to make people in the area feel safer."
