My student son took his Grande Punto sound 1.4cc (2010) into Blackburn Motor Parks for a service; being green he did not ask the cost. He also wanted the car to be M.O.T ed. The car had 47k on the clock. They did not tell him his mileage was between service mileages.

They rang during the day to tell him his front discs were gone and needed replacing, he believed them and authorized the work.

He ended up with a bill for £676.46, £352-88 for the service (labour £230.58) including £35 for the MOT., £216-67 for fitting the front disc kit and £106-91. Included in the service cost was £20 for engine oil; I think the oil should be synthetic and should certainly cost more than £20.

I checked with another fiat dealer who told me the service mileages were 36000 or 54000 and that the basic charge for the 36k would be £306 inc vat and all parts, oils etc. The 54k would be £152 on the same basis.

I personally think this bill is outrageous but would welcome any comments as to the service time and the cost. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. If he took it to the garage specifically asking for a service, then the garage will carry it out regardless of the mileage - the intervals are recommended but there's nothing stopping anyone having it serviced more regularly so why would the garage question it? The labour costs seem to be a bit high for my liking, but like a lot of members I try to do most of my own work so really have no idea what an appropriate labour charge should be. Oil cost sounds about right as I'm fairly sure this engine uses semi-synth.

Yes, he got fleeced but that's how those places work. The lesson here is if you hav'nt got a clue about cars then take someone with you who does or ask around for a place someone would recommend - the place I work for never advertises yet we are always rammed out - nuff said?
