Re: blue ray sux,hd dvd rawks

Looks like DRM played a big part in the final outcome. That's why the film industry probably went for Bue Ray rather than HD DVD. Still, I guess Sony have finally won a format war after screwing up with Betamax and Minidisc, plus I'm sure they were behind the stillborn DAT system as well!

mini disc won its war against dcc and is still going strong, as is DAT or super DAT as its now known, its the industry standard for audio recording,
as for betamax it goes to show that being the best dosen't always mean you'll win

Oh looks like Blueray won afterall. Having it one of the biggest selling consoles always was going to have that effect.

Wish HD-DVD would have won though. It really was the better format. Why they couldn't just change the format of the discs though. HD DivX would easily fit on a Dual Layer DVD so why they cant just update them is beyond me.

Are the new formats still rocking MPEG2 or have they moved onto MPEG4?

DCC was stillborn - I don't know anyone who actually managed to get one. Mini Disc was a failure in that it was supposed to take over from CD. CD and CD RW completely trounced MiniDisc on the sales front and still does.

DAT never took off for home use as if I recall correctly it had a form of DRM built in making it impossible to copy the DIGITAL information of a CD, or if it could you were only allowed to make 2 or 3 copies max. It was (and still is to a certain extent) used in music studios for mastering but for home use it never really took off.

CD has been a surprising victor in the format battle, even more so considering it uses technology that goes back to the 1970's!

!
true dcc was dead before it even started,
mini disc is the replacement to tape, but people seem to prefer low quality mp3
the replacement for cd is sacd as dvd audio seems to have died off

Re: blue ray sux,hd dvd rawks

and whilst i was talking of streaming media vs isp's

According to a few reports and earnings from UK based ISPs, there has been a sharp increase in bandwidth costs thanks to the BBC iPlayer.

The BBC announced that in its first month of operation, January 2008, 2.2 million people watched at least one program using the service which led to almost a tripling in streaming costs for at least one ISP, PlusNet.

The actual cost per user per month for PlusNet rose from 6.1p to 18.3p, meaning the internet TV service is costing the ISP a hefty sum.

Ashley Highfield however, the BBC's director of future media and technology, has said that the iPlayer has "negligible impact on the UK internet infrastructure".
so with people already being on limited bandwidth useage policies................can we expect price hikes or more limitations?
seems isp's need to wake up and see the market for digital content expanding
