sony cuts PS3 price and drops backwards compatibility

Sony has announced that they have dropped the price of the 60GB model PlayStation 3 in the UK, as well as introduced a base level 40GB model.

The new pricing and the new console will become available on October 10th with the larger capacity model dropping to GBP 349 and the smaller model retailing at GBP 299. The 60GB model will also come in a "value pack" that will include two first party games. The pack will replace the current bundle sold for GBP 425 but will not include an extra Sixaxis controller.

In making the 40GB model so cheap, Sony cut a few features. There is no multi-memory card slot, two less USB ports, and no backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

"As we approach our first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, MD of SCEUK.

"We have a brand new 40 GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next-generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price."

David Reeves, the president of Sony Europe noted as well, "The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next-generation PS3 owners."
price cuts - good
game packs - good
memory slot & usb - no biggie i assume
dropping backwards compatibility - um why? they dropped hardware emulation and now software but only in one model

still no mention of quality games though?
One of the good things with the 360 was the ability to upgrade the budget model to the same spec as the premium, although thats not as much a big deal as not being able to play PS2 games on it, thats just silly really,.
wonder if the cheaper one has WiFi and all that stuff aswell?

Re: sony cuts PS3 price and drops backwards compatibility

heres a good one
GameDaily BIZ also contacted SCEE spokesman Nick Sharples who told us, "We have made clear on many occasions that our priority is on developing innovative new features and services for PS3 and not on backwards compatibility. The 40GB model no longer contains any elements of the PS2 chip set which powered backwards compatibility in previous models, and is therefore only compatible with PS one titles."
were into inovative features and playing ps1 titles!!!!

I think I'm right in saying, Gran Turismo 5 will be out on the PS3, and includes a collection of small fiats .

Re: sony cuts PS3 price and drops backwards compatibility

Sounds good and at £300 I may well buy one now. I don't need PS2/PS1 compatibility that's what I've got a PS2 for, and haven't play a PS1 game since buying my PS2.

maybe so but its a huge u turn on specs.

sony always used backwards compatibility as a selling point and beat M$ down for using software emulation.

well at least that Grand Turismo 1 back on the cards.,lol now for the other 3?..,

as custard said they have made a point of backward compatability in the past but also the have branded the PS3 as "the ultimate multimedia system for the home" and that shouldnt have to mean you dusting off an old console out of the back of the wardrobe just so you can play your older games.

Re: sony cuts PS3 price and drops backwards compatibility

How many people really play old games? Like I say I've got a PS1 in the loft with all it's games, I've got a PS2 under the TV. Maybe some people revisit old games but I suspect most people don't touch them once the novalty has gone; If I bought a PS3 I'd probably not want to play old games. Oh and I've got my PSP too

i agree,i never saw it as a selling point and remember sony fan boys telling me it was a major plus point.
the likes of i can sell my ps2,i can keep my ps2 in the bedroom as a dvd player, give it away etc etc and i argued it wasnt what i buy a new console for.
ninty offering retro games is different but my modded xbox! covers all my emulator/retro needs.
my point is from ps2 sony have hyped backwards compatibility and even in the ps3 they hyped it and berated the 360's software option.
though M$ only had to do this as the pissed of nvidea going with ATI in the 360.however sony fairly silently slid into software emulation to save money and now drops the feature.
i dont see the argument of dropping it in one model,if anything i would have said the cheaper model would have been more suited for backwards compatibility than the flagship all singing all dancing one.

Re: sony cuts PS3 price and drops backwards compatibility

The only thing i can see that may make me buy the ps3 is that it plays blu ray, Gran Turismo is crap IMO compared to PGR4 (which comes out on Friday ). The 360 has halo. . . i can't ask for much more oh and i like gamerscore and achievements, ps3 have none of that And online matchmaking isn't as good i dont think. . .

Dropping backwards compatibilty just seems pointless to be honest, if its software emulation then will they make it available for download maybe?

Think I'll play a little DOS emulated Duke Nukem followed by some Bioshock....

PC still leading the way in backwards compatibility and innovation.
