After reports surfaced that the 20 GB model of the PlayStation 3 were becoming extinct, Sony has officially stopped offering the model to retailers in North America.

The decision, based heavily on the low demand for the model was not surprising.

Dave Karraker of Sony America stated, "At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model."

Although there is no decision yet as to whether the 20 GB model will be sold in Europe, this move seems to indicate that the lower end model will soon be gone forever.

guilty as proven. but the 20GB one was still expensive (when new) so anyone with a half a brain would of splashed out on the 60GB one when presented with the choice. sony made a big mistake with that one. trying to copy xbox with different specs i'd imagine.

difference was the 20gb couldnt be specced up later

Makes sense, I don't remember the Core 360 selling so well, well except at launch anyways,,,

My old mate at Honda bought a core, then added the HDD and wireless controller ,, oh well.

yeah most core buyers end up doing the same.
difference with the PS3 is the lack of wifi and memory slots which cannot be upgraded

Talking of upgrading, my PS3 will soon have a huge 260gb HDD and Linux Yellow dog installed, woohoo then in comes Mame

Nope, its a simple case of flicking open the cover on the back of the PS3 and removing the Sata II(?) HDD and installing an off the shelf 160gb Sata II(?) HDD 5400rpm. It sits inside a small compartment. Sony even give you details on how to change to a bigger HDD.

Then using a flash key with the Linux boot type files and a DVD with Linux on it you can then partition the HDD(Full instructions on Sony Forums/Website), so one section has the PS3 front end and the other section Linux. And then mame installed, and then loads of Sega games, oh joy I can't wait Miss playing 2 Crude Dudes and Cool Spot. I know I know, why don't you buy a Mega Drive,,, don't want to, don't need to,,,,,,,
