Hi all.
Something strange has happened to my fiat fiorino 1.3 multijet diesel.

So I drove it for a few hours yesterday, all was fine. went into a shop and when I came out 5 mins later it wouldn't start. It had plenty of battery and all dash lights came on as normal. Managed to bump it down a hill and drove home 2 hours all fine no problem. when I turned it off last night I tried to start it and it started normal. Go to start it this morning to take it to a garage and its dead again, all dash lights are fine etc. so bumped it again and took it to garage, explained to the guy there but when he went out to start it it was fine again and computer couldn't pick up any errors etc.

So any ideas? is there a relay or specific fuse I should check? any help or advise would be great!

Hi, and welcome, :)

BASICS ;
is it spinning over ok, just not running..??

is it a DPF equipped diesel..?

Sorry you will have to excuse my mechanical ignorance! DPF?? there is nothing. turn the key to the usual start position and no clicking or anything. Yet 20 mins after I bump started it and drove to the garage it starts fine! just been out to try it now after its been sat for a few hours and nothing again!

have a look down this list..;

the battery negative to engine / chassis leads do break down internally,

wouldn't bad earth drain the battery though. did on my old van! wondered if it was a dodgy relay or something

this just stops ENOUGH power getting around to actually crank the engine..

it's a relatively common failing on cars . vans over 6 years old..:eek:

the test with a jump lead will soon tell you if that's the fault;)

Wouldn't drain the battery on the normal sense of parasitic draw it would make the stater circuit from battery to engine draw a higher current due to the extra resistance across the ground side
If you were to take a thermal image of it in operation you would almost certainly see the ground circuit considerably higher in temperature than the +30 (live) circuit

I tried jump starting and it doesn't do anything. any other tests I can do? are all earth points around engine bay normally

Jump starting with another battery won't help. The earth terminal on the battery must be clean, the connection from it to the heavy wire must be strong. Follow that to the chassis, also must be clean. Then there will be a strap from chassis to the engine block. Probably lower down in the bay. in your case I would undo and clean them all while also looking for cracks or kinks in the straps. Use sand or Emry paper and copper grease or at least silicone or even light oil when you put them back.

right the plot has thickened!! went out earlier to do earth points and all other suggestions and it started first time! tried it a few times and was all fine. went to fill up with fuel, got in after paying and nothing again. I read somewhere that it could been something to do with the immoboliser or key barrel so gave it a punch under the near the barrel and then it started fine!! could this be another possibility or was it just pot luck? and would it bump start if it was this?

With vehicle electrics start with the basics, check them all through and cross each one of the list.

Make sure they are all electrically sound

Then move onto things like fuses relays starter solenoid, starter-motor and electric gizmos, that way you don't go round in circles.

If you’ve eliminated all other possibilities whatever remains must be the truth (y)

you've not mentioned the KEY symbol on dash..so should NOT be immobiliser related,

it COULD be the basics of the contacts at the bottom of the lock barrel - however you report it being MUCH more if the vehicle has been driven form place to place.

:idea: how many keys on the keyring..??

only have a house key which has been on there since I brought it. is it safe for me to check wires on the barrel without cocking anything up electrically?!

can do.. but I suspect the problem is elsewhere..:)

:idea: unclamp the steering wheel "rakeadjuster" next time it plays up,

the wiring is tightly packed in around the column.. not unheard of for things the get pulled around making poor connection.:(

Simple test to check the immo chip and reader take a piece of kitchen foil of a decent size fold it in half and make a small hole in the middle now put the key blade through the hole and wrap the rest round the key turn ignition on you should see the key light illuminated or flash and it shouldt start that will simulate a immo issue

litrally not done anything to it and its started starting fine again!
