Secondary question, is the plug for the ECU still behind the glove box, even though the ECU is relocated to under the bonnet (MKi, the ECU is behind the glove box)?
The MK2 has the ECU near the inletmanifold, so the main connector, if you ask for that one, is on top of the ECU, it wont go in the car. The input of the sensor goes to the ECU via one of the connectors on the ecu. If its labelled it shod have a M letter on it, or looking at the pic in the manual, it should be the top connector.

First check with your fingers under the plastic lid that covers the fuses right of the steering wheel. That is if you have OBD2, if not here is the connector.
If you are using a universal Diag machine, like bosch, you will need a 4 wire cable, not OBD2 cable. Check the Bosch app for what colour wires to use and just plug them in the connector.
