low throttle almost-stall?!?!!

Hi people.

I have a P reg 1.8 with 75k on it, when about half way through warming up, going from zero to low throttle openings (eg junctions, lights etc) the revs drop (sometimes till the counter hits its stop )and then flare up again. Anybody else come across this/know how to fix it?

Interestingly changing to high octane fuel seemed to help (thought injectors may be dirty so put something nice through it), did about 5 tanks of this and it did it again. Changed back to normal fuel, got better again, then the same again! Eh?

Still pulls pretty well through most of the rev range and no injector lights on. Haven't tried an ECU reset yet but may do at the weekend if I have time.

Cheers for any help!

ps the optimax has restored some power by the way!

Does it rev when you let it run on idle ? Or just after you stop from a drive at a junction or stop light.

No it idles fine. It's litrally just when I put my foot on the gas to move away, the revs drop at first, and then flare up to where I would expect them to be.

Its a touch annoying because if you forget about it and bring the clutch in quick it stalls!

So if Im getting this right, you try to accelerate, lose power (rpm), then gain them back (in most cases). The car is acting up as it has a power hole ?

If that is the problem, did you pass your emission test recent, because it sounds like your lambda sensor is shot.

no it's not when accelerating, its when trying to raise the revs a bit to move away from a traffic light/junction/in traffic. It's when raising the engine from idle, once going it's fine.

When fully warm or fully cold it does a similar thing but only loses 100rpm or so, if you didn't know you wouldn't notice kind of thing!

mine used to do exactly the same, and never used to go above 1/4 way on the temp gauge, i changed the thermostat and engine temp sensor and it solved the problem, maybe this could be your problem??

Also had a similar problem with the HT leads, when did u last change them and your plugs?

the 1.8 doesn't have HT leads and the spark plugs appear to be in good condition....... I have done the thermostat which helped the temperature issue (same as you used to have) but still isn't perfect (takes a long time to warm up).

I might give the temp sensor a go, I'm sure it won't cost much and it's not as if it can do any harm!

Change the plugs. The long warmup means something isn't right rather than a duff sensor.

yeh I'll try changing the plugs, I have no idea when they were last changed. Glad I don't have a 145 cloverleaf now- expensive job......

i'll drop a new temp sensor in as well whilst I'm under the bonnet. Cheers guys, fingers crossed and all that.

You say the 1.8 has no HT leads ? so how does the power get from ignition pack to the plugs then ???

i had this same thing, its was the engine coolant temp sensor on mine. it was a 1.8 as well. thats what happenened on mine and i changed that and it was fine.
