Now I've seen who actually wrote the latest "wing mirror" title, the above is seen in a compeletly different light.

Why didn`t we have something like Lazy Town when we younger
Wing mirror, door mirror, we all know what someone means
People don't get arsey when others refer to a vacuum cleaner as a hoover, when in fact, Hoover is a brand name synonymous with vacuum cleaners.
Or when people refer to satellite dishes as "Sky Dishes"
Well, most people don't. People like Mark do

No, a DOOR mirror is called a DOOR mirror because it's fitted to a DOOR.
A WING mirror is called a WING mirror because it's fitted to a WING.

Well. How about this £0.02 Mark
It strikes me that the wing of a car, is so called, not because its aeronautically engineered, or enables flight, but because it happens to be on the sides of the car. The wings as it were.
So, we have a central rear view mirror, and we have 2 wing mirrors on our cars. We don't call them wing mirrors because they are bolted through the wings, just as we don't call them door mirrors because they are bolted to the doors. They are known as wing mirrors because they are located 'in the wings' and allow us to look down the sides (the wings or flanks) of the car....
