I just wanted to remove my front shocks. But I cam accross a rusted bolt that didn't want to move because of rust (as if soldered in). What can I do.
It is one of the two parallel lower bolts, just above brakes. It is the second try, one week after the first where I used WD40.

Did someone get this problem?

What should i do?
1) Go buy another bolt and drill or grind it?
2) Use a hammer to force it out? I tried but not that hard... I don't wanna break something

I'm open to any suggestions,

Thanks Fredo.

Heating up, or using a hammer and a spaner at the same time

hammer and spanner or find a extra long spanner ive got some then to get the bolt out punch and hammer but id get a new bolt and nut anyway cos if u dammage it u can replace it but if its that rusty it need changing anyway

heat it until its glowing red on the nut side then take the heat off and and wait for it to stop glowing . now put the spanner on it and turn it will either snap or come open either way its off.

Either way buy new nuts and bolts from Fiat, they are about £1.50-2.00 per nut/bolt set.

Another option is to get loads and loads of WD40 or other penatrating oil into it over nite.

Hi,

So I'll buy new nuts first then heat!

Thank you all! I'll try to post here when done but not before next week...

re

if you use wd40 or plusgas or somethign that is a penetrating oil you are supposed to try and do it up 1/4 of a turn or so to 'break' the seizure?

then coupe lof long spanners, make sure you heat just the nut and not the bolt. not sure i'd do it till it was glowing that much,

also wire brush to remove any loose rust etc?

how about a guide on this? as i plan to renew my front suspension and the old haynes is missing :(

it used to be like the bible in my bed side table!

I did this job a few weeks ago. Nut splitter and cold chisel, new bolts £10 from local fiat dealer. Expensive, but I know they're right.

I must add that I removed the nut already!!
But the bolt won't get out of the shock. The bolt seem welded in the shock. It doesn't turn with a spanner.

re

ah right that is a different thing altogether, i woudlnt heat up the bolt then as it will expand and be tighter!

and i woudlnt heat up strut too much incase of making it weak,

it isnt threaded into the strut from what i remember, so i would put the nut back on until its level with the end of the bolt so you have a bigger surface area then give it a short sharp whack to see if it loosens it.

then maybe try putting long spanner or long breaker bar and socket onto bolt and just turn it, worst that will happen is you snap the head off but that doesnt make loads of difference if you going tohave to punch it out anyway!

This is the best way to do it.

Apply machine oil to it overnight. WD40 etc is too volatile and doesn't work so well as it evapourates over a few hours and stops penetrating.

Next put two nuts on the thread of the bolts, and lock them up tight to each other, put place them on the thread in such a position that they aren't holding the bolt tight to the hub carrier. This has given you a second surface to crank on, as well as the bolt head.

Apply one spanner/wrench to the bolt head, another to the the nut nearest the end of the bolt thread. In relation to this bolt apply torque to both tools in a clockwise direction. Use extension bars if neccessary, you are highly unlikely to strip two bolt head/nut flats at once.

Crank on both at once with a mate, and the whole bolt will rotate.

hit it hard with a hammer!

go for it just f**KING clout it one :) it will come out.

re

i'd stnd y what i say and put a nut on the end first incase you miss slightly clouting it.

but at end of the day you arent going to do any harm hitting it with a fu"k off hammer. or putting a massive braker br on it and turning it

there are no threads or anythgin for you to worry abuot!
