im not sure, it was on here when i bought the laptop, second hand. ive had it over a year but it must only have recently downloaded an update or something which has brought up this message

If it's not a genuine install then I don't think an illegal KeyGen program will remove the message. Once XP is installed, I don't think you can change the 25 Digit Product Key unless there is an in depth registry hack, and that stuff is best left to experts.

TBH, back up your stuff, go and buy an OEM copy of XP (XP Home can be had for about £45-£50 from somewhere like Ebuyer) and do a clean, legitimate install.

If, however, you know your installation to be genuine and you have a genuine XP install CD, contact Microsoft for support :)

Quote from the above mentioned MS KB Article...

"Warning The steps in the article are effective only on Volume License media. If you try these steps on OEM media or on retail media, you will not change the product key."

I doubt this will work.

...or bite the bullet and buy a proper one.
I have been using a dodgy copy for years. Decided it was about time i bought a genuine one. If you click one of the links on your system it will take you to a microsoft page that allows u to buy a new key for £92 (XP Pro) which then gets rid of all messages and updates your key

Oh - sorry. We have used this in the office before with our own keys when we moved to MS Select 6 licensing.

My bad.

Does your laptop have a COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) stuck on the bottom ?

It's a label about 50mm x 20mm and states the version of Windows it's licenced for and the Serial Key.

If you have one of these then you have a legitimate copy of Windows, if the laptop is less than 5 years old it should have one.

Does the version of Windows match the version installed ? - Windows XP Home or PRO etc. ?

You actually can change that product key. There are a few cracks available for that :)
Not sure will that help you with that message.

its the windows genuine crack you need mate. you can find it on most torrent sites, newsgroups and p2p software like limewire. it will solve that problem , cos i do it on numerous occasions. microsoft keep updating it every month this year, but a crack always come out :)
