A question - I have a 1.8 HLX (1998 R Reg) and whilst reading a repair manual it mentioned that some have hydraulic and others have cable clutches - how on earth do you know which has which? Are all the 1.8's hydraulic?

Just a query, nothing wrong at the moment except grinding occasionally when going into reverse :)

i think your car has an hydraulic clutch.
have a look under your brake fluid reservoir, how many hoses?
2 or 3?

you can check where they go to, 2 should go to your brake master cylinder and the 3rd to the clutch.

My W reg 1.8 hlx has a hydraulic clutch, I know because the cylinder went the other week!
For your future reference, the cylinder is located underneath the battery tray, cost me £26 for a new one and was very easy to replace.

ALLLL cars grind when going into reverse if you are hamfisted with it.
