I am looking to set up two savings accounts in which I initially plan to invest £300 a month into, one for general saving, the other for a new car/ holiday etc.

Can anyone please help me as to which type of account to choose and at which branches offer the better savings accounts, as I am completely lost. :s

I have looked at a Lock Down account which means i can't access my money for a year but this returns a healthy interest rate, also general ISA accounts but the info just washes straight over my head.

If your saving that kind of money, speak to a Financial Adviser. It won't cost you anything.
A cash ISA would be a good bet, but everything depends on what returns you want and how quickly you would want access to the funds.

i unfortunately have a bank manager for a wife (you try explaining the mods!)

she has our savings going into Cahoot instant access, which pays something just over 4%, which is twice as high as hsbcs 90 day tie in account. It's instant access and you get a higher rate for not having a cheque book but you can still transfer online instantly.

Cahoot may be a good bank, but be wary of their credit card.
They have a habit of taking more than one payment if you opt for direct debit payments.
Also, if you alter the amount of repayment, they have been known to take that AND the minimum repayment.
Both the above happened to my O.H. on more than one occasion!
