I have a 2003 Ducato 2.0 JTD.

Recently, the speedometer has become faulty -

For first 10 miles approx of every trip, the speedo reads zero, then gradually jumps into life and behaves perfectly thereafter. Mileometer does not register until speedo starts to work

Van has only done 8500 miles.

Any ideas or anyone with similar problem????????

Bizarre behavior of speedo and fuel guage in my van was cured by reseating the connectors on the back of the meter panel.It's been fine for several thousand miles since i did it.

Ducato speedo failure

Ducato is base for motor caravan.Speedo(including mileometer)does not work at beginning of journey but kick in form time to time until kicking in properly
after about 30 miles.Any help out there please.

Just had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with my 2002 Ducato Mk2 based motorhome.
The problem is the speedo 'sending unit' mounted on the back of the gearbox.
You will also find that it affects the engine performance as it also feeds a signal to the engine management unit.
Part cost £53.
Easy to replace.
I have complained to Fiat UK about the premature failure of this part.(9000 miles.) Don't suppose they will bother replying!!!

Many thank's for your help.Will look into it.I was thinking that it could be a poor connection behind the speedo but now I have something more likely.

You don't say what version Ducato you have or how old it is etc. The earlier ones just had a cable !
grahamb - is yours a Mk2 or Mk3? 2002 is the year they changed. Mk2 makes yours the same as the 1994 model? Also, although ti's only done 9000 miles, Fiat will doubtless say it's 4/5 years old and well past any warranty regardles of mileage so I wouldn't hold out any hope on that! It could, for instance, be corrosion of the contacts.

Hi,
Sorry, it must be the Mk3 then, late 2002.
The seal had failed on the sending unit, the print circuit board was flooded with gearbox oil.
I was rather hesitant at whether you could remove the unit without draining the gearbox oil but only a very small amount of oil came out.
Or was the gearbox overfilled. There is no level plug, apparantly you just put the required amount in.

I have the same problem only sometimes it stays dead for longer, I will have a look round the back of the speedo and push all the plugs before I do anything else..

I have a simular problem Ducato 2005 15JTD on holiday last week milage 13k speedo and milometer stopped working i have driven another 1000 miles and it has not worked once. Electricaly seems ok needle moves sightly too zero when the engine is turned on. Any suggestions would be appricated

Get it into ur nearest FIAT dealers it wont take much for them to plug it in and diagnose the problem i work at one it cant be too bigger job lol

Fiat Garage found fault: Fuse blown think F17 F11, wiring harness chafting causing a short. Other problem was, glow plug light flashed after starting, for about 20 times.

did they say/you know where abouts the harness was chaffing?

Hi,

I have had an isuue with my boxer motorhome in that the speedo would jump about after swiching on the ignition.

I have bought the gearbox sensor and will fit this weekend, however just wondered if anyone knew whether I should disconect the battery first?

One other point the sensor from the Peugeot dealer was only £28 odd, bit cheaper than the Fiat version.

I think I have same problem as grahamb47 - speedo does not work at start of journey then after 5-10 miles suddenly starts. Questions: where is the gearbox sender, how easy is it to change, where can I get a new one from - mailorder/web ? I have a 2003 Ducato based Autotrail Tracker motorhome with 11,000 miles on the clock. Any answers? Thanks.

Hi Stuart,

Drive is situated just above the drivers side drive shaft. Depending on your size you might just be abe to slide underneath without jacks. However be prepared for a small amount of oil to come out once the unit is removed. It is held by one single bolt and the wiring plug. I placed the van on a slopeing drive nose down with the drivers wheel on a wooden block and this was sufficient to make the oil run to the other corner of the box stopping any spillage.

My van is an Autosleeper Symbol with 10500 miles and according to Peugeot dealer there is issues with the senders

Thank you for that advice - I'll give it a go. I assume the sender on the Peugeot is the same as a Fiat? Will let you know how I get on.

Pleased to be of assistance, mine is working fine now. Not sure of the real problem but it started whilst we were in Scotland and the rain was coming down very heavy and persistant, so I think the sender got some water in.

Thats what I put it down to anyway.
