Hi All,

On my camper van (1996 1.9TD) the previous owner fitted a relay under the bonnet and tied all the wires to the heater and breather hoses (n) As the fridge comes on without the ignition/engine running I thought he'd bypassed the split charge relay due to some problem, however on tracing the wires two go to the battery (+ & -), one goes to the starter motor solenoid and the other is joined to a wire in the loom.If I take the battery + one off it doesn't turn over (no surprise there lol) anyhow I'd like to do a better job than the previous owner if possible, so my question is where is the starter relay really located? Thanks in advanced.

Regards,
Del

My 1993 TD10 caravan has a large [about 2" x 3"] grey box just above the battery, wires coming from the starter go into this box so I'm guessing this will be the starter relay. Just behind it is a black bakelite junction box which seems to feed the caravan electrical panel beside the caravan steps. Both boxes are screwed to the inner wing.

He probably had an issue with the ignition lock contacts or the starter relay in the fuse box (if there was one).
If the relay does what it is supposed to do I would make no changes. It is not unusual to have a separate starter relay under the bonnet; a normal location is next to the glow plug relay.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I will just rewire it a bit more tidily and put an inline fuse on the battery + wire.
