Hi all

First post here. I have a 2000 Ducato based Autotrail motor home with a 2. 8JTD power train. Whilst on holiday I suddenly lost 5th gear, the gearbox simply disengaging 5th gear. 1-4 and reverse OK. I have also noticed that the gear lever no longer rocks when applying and removing power. I think that the rear engine mount (gearbox mount), may have failed but I can't see anything obviously wrong as the engine has now canted backwards, I suspect that the 5tb gear problem is occurring because I can't engage the gear properly.

Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions please?

Thanks

Martyn

After 17 years new rubber mounts will do no harm. Just change them all, it's certain that if one has failed gear selection will be affected. My Ducato TD10 is a 1993 and they all look really simple to change, although maybe tricky to source.

hi
you will have to get underneath and get a lever behind the rear gearbox
mount and see if there is mutch movement on it. mines a 1994 and it
is very easy to change. mine has threaded rods to select the gears and
i had to adjust one after replacing the geabox

the gearbox on these older Ducatos is just terrible, grossly inadequate for the weight of a loaded van and a bad linkage especially the RHD ones which I expect your is. If it's column change there will be a complicated crossover linkage maybe with nylon bushes just above the gearbox selector shaft, take it out and all to pieces, rebuild with good grease and new washers and spacers as necessary especially new rubber bushes inside the selector shaft support pillar, at least then you can begin to look elsewhere if you still can get 5th.

However 5th and reverse are on the same selector out of three, I'm not sure why you can get reverse and not 5th, or why you can't get neither R nor 5 ??

Look at the JKTowers article on the Peugeot version, it's the same gearbox and he shows some good snaps of the linkage and its problems, and his tips are well worth reading..
