Just driven up a 500m climb in Spanish mountains, pulled into viewpoint and water is boiling away...
Seems that the two electric radiator fans didn't cut in.
Anybody tell me where the sender unit for these is located? thinking either duff connection or not fitted properly when new radiator fitted a while back (garage since gone into liquidation...)
 
OK, I found This Post - and managed to find the sensor.
There was a wire which looked like it had been trapped, sure enough the wire inside teh plastic casing was broken. Made new connection with connector, taped up.

Ran the engine to get it hot but the fans still didn't kick in - I let it get as hot as I dare but still no joy! Checked that the fan that is easily accssible is working by giving a straight feed and that is good.

At whaat point onthe temp gauge should the fans kick in? At how many marks above the centre point (or below the red H) should the fans start?
 
Can only repeat my experience on my 1999 Boxer. Sender on bottom left of rad viewed from front, not causing second fan to come on. Intermittent. Replaced sender. Fault remained. Found problem was the female connector pins that connect to the sender. The inner tang had corroded off so there was no friction contact. Only visible with bright light and magnifying glass.
I soldered wires to the sender and then crimped these to the loom wires after cutting the faulty plug off.

You should be able to remove your plug from the sender and test the fans and make up a remote switch if needs be.

Thanks to the info supplied by Andy, I was able to do some testing!

Both fans work when fed an independent power source. Only one fan works when shorting the leads near the temp sensor to earth...

As a temporary fix I've rigged a switch in the cab so I can turn on one of the fans when I see the gauge creeping up; far better than having no fans working! I'll do some more testing when we get back to the UK in a couple of weeks...

If the fan works when fed current directly but not when the sensor is bypassed then it must be the fan relay. On my 1999 1.9 they are in a plastic box just left of centre behind the top of the radiator. Had one stick keeping the fan on, it would stop when you gave it a hefty tap, replaced both relays. They are fairly common and can be obtained from auto parts shops.
