Hi all,
I have a Fiat Ducato Campervan 1.9TD 2001 SWB, and the 5th gear creates a very loud whine, a bit too much to bother turning the radio on as it is so loud!
I had the gearbox rebuilt (New clutch, bearings etc) but couldn't find a replacement 5th gear so stuck with what we had, and the noise is still there! 99.999% certain it is a MG5TU box

So I am looking for some options...

1. Has anyone ever fitted a 6 speed gearbox on to the 1.9TD (XUD9TE) engine?
2. Can I change the gear ratio for just the 5th gear? It might make finding a part easier, and also improve fuel efficiency!?
3. Use a 306 gearbox for parts?

Thats not the correct gearbox, the gearbox on his ducato has the gear lever down the front and not on top

i have the same vehicle as the fiat ducato 2001 1.9TD 230 type and the gearboxes for these are as rare as hens teeth

i had to collect the parts from all over europe to make a complete box for my motorhome, from five different sources

the problem with these gearboxes is not a lubication problem as the gears are in a bath of oil (proved to work for many years)

not poor quality of parts mine has just completed 20000 trip and no sigh of wear

yes to water ingress the gearbox is under a shower of water every time it rains, cover the gearbox with polythene or divert water

yes the 5th gear has a design fault the gear selector hits the nut on the main shaft while selecting 5th this can unscrew the nut

yes motor homes are heavy and this box was never designed the cope the weight, treat this box gentle and dont labour it in 5th gear

The way I would solve this would be leave the gearbox in vehicle take wheel
and the end cover off gearbox and unbolt gear selector and end clip, pull off gear and on the back you will see serial numbers, my is ML51/31 1152/01/18h28L4

check all components for visual wear

now put it all back together

go on ebay find you parts

fit your parts when they arrive and dont change gear ratios, just make sure you dont change into 5th under 55 mph and only when cruising on flat or down hill motorway

P.S syncros wear out fast on these boxs, always try to match engine speed with selected gear speed, or you will wear them out and have a grinding gear change
