I have recently purchased a 2015 Hymer Exsis i588 LHD motorhome built on a Ducato chassis, it has the 2.3 multijet 150bhp engine. One of my first modifications was to fit a Pioneer Avic F88dab, satnav, music system etc, which is a magnificent piece of kit.
For obvious reasons, I then decided to replace the standard steering wheel with a Ducato multi function one which was located on Ebay for £55.00, apart from fun and games removing the airbag, all went well and it fitted perfectly. Except..... I cannot see how to connect the telephone and music buttons, I am aware I will need to buy an interface to link from the back of the clock spring that sits behind the steering wheel, to the back of the Pioneer unit, these are freely available on line.
However, there are only 6 electrical terminals on the front face of the existing clock spring, two for the airbag and two for the horn, this only leaves two and I would have expected to see 4, 2 positive and 2 negative for the respective hands free telephone on the LHS and 2 for the music volume buttons etc on the RHS.
Does any one know how I should be wiring up these steering wheel buttons, and is there a replacement clocks spring that provides the extra terminals that I believe I need?
Anyone providing the solution to the above can name their favorite charity and I will send a donation as a thank you.
Regards

AFAIK it doesn't go to the radio it goes to the body computer and that talks to the radio over canbus.

So while you can get canbus stalk controllers to use aftermarket headunits if your vehicle wasn't setup for it probably won't have the canbus wiring and body computer might be need coding especially as there are different sets of steering wheel controls depending on if the stock radio had DAB, Bluetooth, Navigation.

Hello RFC7,

I'm currently in the same process:

What has been done:
- Steering wheel command installed
- ECU reconfigured to support 8 buttons SWC
- Connect2 interface for my double din radio installed

I'm now waiting for the clock spring that is also including the SWC cable.
If you want I can send you pictures and information about the process if this is working of course.:D

Fantastic, so there is life on Mars !!!!

Any pictures you can send would be much appreciated. I think I am pretty close with my installation but cannot see how it is possible to connect the control buttons on the steering wheel to the existing clock spring. if I am right, I need to know the part number of the correct replacement clock spring and what adjustments you have done, or had done to the ECU.
This project has certainly been the most taxing one I have attempted in a long time, as it seems impossible to obtain any information on the subject.
Meanwhile I am reluctant to clip the airbag back in place as they are such a bastard to take off !!!
Two or more heads are always better than one, so perhaps together we can crack this problem...
I await your response and thank you for your previous comments.

Hello RFC7,

Good news, the SWC are working. The squib must be replaced with the three wire connector - Horn, Airbag and SWC ! Here are two small videos (Sorry in french for the Adria forum ).:D I agree this is almost impossible to get information on the subject, it took me a while.

Squib removal

The result

I'll prepare a small doc for you with part numbers.

Cheers,

Hi Yellowhammer,

Again I appreciate your continued response, however, whilst you have confirmed what I already believed was the case, i.e. I need to change the clock spring, I still have no idea as to the part number of the correct replacement clock spring, do you have the part number or a photograph of the one you used?

Hello Ron,

If you have only a single airbag, the reference is Delphi 59001157.
I was in contact with the owner of the site below, you'll find one.

Hi Corcai,

All this Forum activity has been most helpful, thankyou for all the contributions, which collectively has enabled me to progress further in the replacement of the standard 2015 Ducato steering Wheel for a Multifunctional one to allow a hands free link to a new Pioneer f88dab Satnav/music/phone heads up unit.
For the benefit of other readers, here is an update.
To achieve the above I now know that it is necessary to replace the existing Squib clock spring with a different model incorporating additional electrical contacts to enable connections to be made to the phone and music buttons on the new wheel. The required part number is Delphi 59001157 which appears to be the same item as fitted to Citroen, Boxer and (in my case) Ducato, note: the actual year of manufacture of your vehicle is important.
From on line visuals I can see there is a third connector on the replacement clock spring, can you confirm if the black lead plugs directly into the buttons on the left hand side of the wheel? if this is the case and everything fits, will an interface available from Connect2 then plug into the back of the clock spring and hook up into the back of the Pioneer (2 Din) f88dab Satnav/music unit?
If that's a yes, and all the above comes together will it then be necessary to start playing around with the afore mentioned MES (Mobile Earth Stations) and Canbus settings etc etc, to complete the project? Because I know nothing about the latter two Auto Electrical Adjustments, but hopefully know a man who does !!
I trust the progress of the above saga will prove helpful to other readers, and I will shortly be able to report the successful conclusion of this long running project.

A few more information.

- The squib that I've used is coming from a Sweedish broken Boxer (2016)

- You must of course connect the plug back.
- 2 on the picture.

squib2.jpg

- The three connectors are horn, airbag and left steering wheel connector.

To decode the CANbus and configure the buttons, you need to add the Connect2 interface behind your radio.

squib3.jpg

1 - Connector from the CAR
2 - Connect2 interface with three cables (GND,Key1,Key2) but only valid for Chinese radios.

Finally, you need to use Multi Ecu Scan to add and enable the 8 buttons option.

I hope it'll help :)

Hi Yellowhammer,

Thank you again for your assistance in this matter, I am almost there !!!
Can I please ask you to post a photograph of the replacement steering wheel you used as there are several options available. Mine has three buttons on each side, the middle ones being toggle switches, is this the same as your steering wheel? and if so, does the third black lead coming from the clock spring plug straight into the three buttons on the left hand side of the steering wheel.
Note: I would post a picture of mine but I am unsure how to do it on this Forum.
As a matter of interest, following an e-mail i sent to Fiat Italy, I received a telephone call this morning from Fiat Customer Services in Milan saying 'Sorry we are unable to assist you in your enquiry' !!!!!

Hello Ron,

I"ve used the original steering wheel but I had to cut it a little bit, no not with a hammer :D

8 buttons commands, yes the plug coming from the squib is directly connected to the left command.

Hi Yellowhammer,

Thank you very much for attaching the pictures of your steering wheel, I am delighted to confirm that my steering wheel is identical to yours so hopefully I am ready to go with this.
I am about to order and fit the same clock spring as you have used then hopefully the local supplier of my Pioneer Avic F88Dab unit will know the correct interface to run from the back of the unit into the clock spring..... Sorted ! well almost ?

I will post what will hopefully confirm that all is working correctly, thank you again for your continued involvement.

Very interesting thread.

I've just ordered a new Carthago motorhome and they don't offer the leather covered steering wheel or gear knob but they do if you go for the 180bhp option.

So I'm looking at adding a leather wheel similar to the ones in your pictures but probably less the multifunction buttons.

Do either of you know relevant Fiat part numbers as I'm trying to get a feel of the price for new parts but they need a part number or chassis VIN number.

Hi all

I am going down the same road on my 2017 van. So far I have the new 8 button wheel.

I have removed the airbag and checked the connections they are identical to those in the earlier photo. (Yellow Apple)

I am about to order a squib with hopefully the correct leads and plugs. I have checked the van harness the multi plug is fully wired.

My questions are:
Is there a module or control box that converts button presses to can bus input required? Or will this be pre installed? I cannot see this mentioned in any previous threads.

Any tips or pitfall info would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance lee

I am also in the process of doing this, I have fitted a replacement squib/clock spring with the additional connectors, all connected up to a new multifunction steering wheel, I have the connect2 adaptor all matching up with the correct connectors in the harness, everything seemed to be there on the harness with matching connectors for the radio, I then enabled the 8 button wheel with MES but unforunately the buttons are still not doing anything, any ideas, did I miss something, are your upgrades working OK after doing this ?.
Thanks in advance.

By way of an UPDATE; I have now managed to get this working successfully, the initial issue was identifying the correct connects2 interface, for my vehicle it needed the ‘open dash’ version for Fiat 2012-2014. Once that was connected it started working straight away. So just to recap, to get to this point I had to change the steering wheel to the 8 button multifunction wheel, add the Connects2 interface including the universal patch lead, add the steering connector(clock spring/squib) which had 3 connectors, and then enable the 8 button wheel option in Multiecuscan, hope this helps others trying to do this.
Ps. Fiat dealers maintain this is not possible, but it is.

Hi AMJohn, Great to hear you have had success. I too will be pursing this soon on a 2019 model Carthago.
At this stage I don't know about accessing the MES wit out going to a Fiat dealer. I would be interested to know if there is a gadget available to enable this and where.

Also did you make a note of any part numbers info you could share?

Thanking you in anticipation.
