Ducato II 2.0 JTD 2006. OK, recently broke down, engine light flashing randomly for about three miles, two or three slight misfires, still drove fine, switched off the engine then it refused to start, turning over fine, just not firing. Not bangs or rattles. AA called, bloke spent ages spraying easy start into the intake and cranking it, then used his code scanner, fault reported as follows ( they email it to you)

"Engine control 1 - 75G / Diesel EDC 15C7P1320 - Sync. camshaft to crankshaft. Error Message : Open circuit.P0335 - Speed sensor.. Error Message : Signal improbable."

He muttered something about crank shafted end float and that I would need a new engine. Unhappy with this diagnoses, I asked for another AA guy to give a second opinion, the next one said that he thought cam belt might have jumped a tooth and the the computer was stopping the engine starting to protect it, bit late after all the cranking the first guy had done! They then relayed it 240 miles home.

Just started to look at it, replaced the crank/rpm sensor, no change. Removed the timing covers and confirmed that the flywheel lock lines up perfectly with the camshaft pin. Mine seems to be a little different to the ones in all the you tube videos and the fiat workshop manual in that it had a hole in the cam pulley to lock it where as all the others I have seen lock between the gaps in the pulley although they were Citroen/Peugeot versions. Water pump is leaking but not seized. I have not changes the Cam sensor yet, that's my next job. I find it hard to believe that crank shaft end float would manifest itself suddenly or is that wrong? anyone have any other ideas what might be wrong?

Crankshaft sensor is a dumb 400ohm inductive sensor, if I had an open circuit error I would first measure the cranksensor resistance with a multimeter then I would measure the resistance at the ecu connector pins 99 & 100. That will quickly tell you if you have a wiring issue. While its off check for water ingress in the ecu connector.
