Hi,

I have a 1999 Fiat Ducato 2.8 LHD Motorhome with a Fiat Keycode light that keeps showing.

It will go out if I follow the instructions for re-setting it in the owners manual but I would like to plug in a diagnostic tool but cannot find the socket.

Several sites show photos of where it is in other vans but not mine my wife is fed up being pushed up-side down under the dashboard.

Can anyone help/

Regards

Bob

Is it 2.8d, 2.8td, 2.8idtd or 2.8jtd?

hi Bob, :)
beware that the socket / terminals may have a cap on so is NOT super obvious..
it'll probably still be the 3-pin so will be basics only..

what is this procedure..??

generally the key has a chip
the ign. barrel has an AERIEL that reads the chip..
and the body computer then disarms the immobiliser.

any talk of "entering a code" is bad news..

Hi,

Trying to answer everyone.

The engine I am sure is a 2.8td ( how would I check that, this has always been a question )

Regarding the procedure, it's on page 11 of the Ducato owner handbook after where it explains the Keycode system and what should happen when you start the vehicle there is a section that says . .

Stop the engine.
Turn the key back to MAR, the light should go out after one second.
If the light fails to go leave engine stopped for 30 secs and repeat the process (Paraphrased)

There is no way we would attempt to enter any codes, we do however have the "Red" key and the codes.

We are going to use a different key for a few days and see what happens.

Like many others we have spent ages looking for this three pin connector, I am reluctant to pull too many things apart just in case everything stops and we are still in Spain.

The light does not come on every time we drive, there does not seem to be a pattern for it's behaviour.

The antenna ring on the key barrel seems intact and undamaged.

We have identified the adapter we need, we just need the socket.

How would I find out if it even has one?

Cheers

Bob

Have you anything that documents or shows the engine type e.g 8140.63 or 8140.43? Have you tried asking Fiat by giving them the VIN?
Have you looked for the plug in the engine bay? I saw this on the web: "on a LHD hymer fiat ducato 2.8jtd the diagnostic port is a 3 pin with 2 wires with a plastic cap on it, its on the right hand side in the engine bay, attached to a large black plastic panel (which I think will be the ecu)."

Sounds like the code 1 system and mechanical pump the usual cure is to chisel the immobiliser circuit off the pump and run an ignition live 12v to the stop solenoid. Later pumps were armour plated which makes it a big job if your lucky yours isn't and its a 30min job.

Hi,

Engine is shown as 8140.43, what does that mean??

We are now living in France and at this moment communication with French garage has it's problems, they will do almost anything other than work/help.
We have had to source parts ourselves before now, they say the vehicle is too old!!

We have looked extensively in the engine bay with no luck.
We have driven with a different key. . . .same result.

When the light comes on that's it, there is no other effect; speed is ok, power also.

It is an IVECO 2.8 Direct injection engine. with that information it is perhaps possible to establish whether it has an OBD socket and where it is?

I have seeen this response from a very well respected source to a question regarding OBD on 2.8 models:
"You can't just group it as "the 2.8 engine" I'm afraid. 2.8 pre JTD has no management, it is an old school mechanical injection system. 2.8 JTD from inception (2001 from memory) to facelift (2003 I think) has a three pin connection for diagnostics, it is located dangling somewhere above the bellhousing in the engine bay usually."

I believe yours is pre JTD.

There no point in plugging it in, when they get erratic its the electronic unit on
the pump just bypass it.

If I was you I'd ring the nearest english or irish pub and ask for a recommendation or look for a polish garage.

This is how it looks on the end of the pump:

You should fit a thatcham immobiliser or an alarm with thatcham 2 after you disable it e.g. imobilisers

Hi,

Am I right in thinking the photo is of the injector pump??
A couple of years ago we had a fuel tank problem and pretty sure the actual fuel pump was in the tank.
We had to source all the parts from a Ducato parts guy in Holland.
No-one has ever categorically told me whether engine is TD, TDI so bit of a prob when asking for help.

Cheers

The Wiki link I posted to did. It is a Turbo Diesel direct injection engine. Plus an expert said " 2.8 pre JTD has no management, it is an old school mechanical injection system."

Hi,

Many thanks to everyone who replied, it seems we will just have to get back home and let the locals loose on it. At least at the moment it isn't causing any more problems other than raising stress levels.

Thanks again, once we find out what it is I will post the result but French working practices being what they are this may take a while
