whats the best engine 2.3 or 3.0 for powder and mpg

Depends how you drive mate,

2.3 as far as I can remember revs @ 2700 approx at 70mph

3.0 just over 2000 at 70mph

I get anywhere from 36-41 avg 65-70 on a long motorway run loaded,
You can travel at 50mph ticking over @1500rpm 50+mpg if flat roads

If you do mileage (I do 100k a yr) then add in the saving from not changing a belt every 110k, in my mind
3.0 is by far a better driving lump,

But,
If you like to have fun, drive a lot in towns/cities, stop start, twisty hills
Then the 2.3 maybe better as the 3.0 does drink over 65mph and cities etc

Hope that helps

Plus, just gone over 330,000 this morning still on original clutch, only 2 throttle valves, 1 turbo under warranty from water ingress. But we do have a hesitation that's not showing up any faults, possible throttle pedal that needs investigation

Power,
Well let's just say, out of the 26 other vans loading at same time as me each night,
Nothing passes up the slip into the M6 at Coventry if I decide to play ?

I was thinking for a motorhome 4250kg towing a car train weight around 5700kg

I would say the torque alone speaks for itself
Economy well you probably expect little with either engine I guess towing that lot

But it will get up hills decidedly easier than the 2.3

I can only comment on a fully loaded 3.5 t van

I drive a 2.3, but there is no substitute for cc's. The 3.0 litre must be the better option for your use. To my mind its a no-brainer. Geoff.

I got a tag axle at the mo that's a 3.0l and pulls like a train thinking of downsizing but most of the smaller only have a 2.3 there are some 3.0l around just don't know which way to jump

Our 160/3.0lt tag motorhome weighs in at just under 5000kg and has averaged 20.5mpg over the past 4000 miles at an average speed of 28.5mph. As far as mpg goes, anything beginning with a "2" is a bonus.
If we were downsizing, the latest 2.3lt/150 looks a good compromise but I'd still like to think the 3.0lt is the beast to have (especially if it's been re-mapped like ours lol).

Having had a 3L 4250kg motorhome, sandwiched between two 2.3L 3500kg ones, I would go for the 3L in your case. If you do go for a 2.3 then if euro5 go for a 150bhp one.
It is a strong possibility that the 3 L will be discontinued when the euro6 models are introduced.

Why do you say that ?

Much higher co2 figure, but euro6 is more about NOx an dparticulate matter which they should be able to solve with adblue. I'd be surprised if they discontinued it.

I hope your right (y)

The van must have higher gearing than the chassis, mines doing 58mph (sat nav) @ 2000rpm. Returns between 24 & 27mpg (curtainsider)

hi guys mine is a tag about 5000kg's remapped to about 192 bhp (ish ) new throttle control egr cheater fitted inlet manifold cleaned & in this cold weather ( it does affect the mpg ) about 22mpg plus so on a long run fill to fill would be interested to see what she returns if you do have the 3l mapped out WATCH the clutch because going up say if you know that hill climb on the motorway from san sebastian to Zaragoza it go up there like a rocket BUT drop down hills to fifth to stop any slip
