My 2.8JTD squeals from the alternator belt when starting the engine. I have tried to tighten it but it got only a little better for awhile, maybe because I do not know how much it should be tightened? Is there a press-a-finger-on-the-belt-measurement that tells the correct tension? I will also replace the belt, so even more important to get it right ;)

If tightening doesn't completely solve the issue, the belt is worn and sits on the bottom of the pulley.
A new belt only rests on the flanges and doesn't squeal even when the tension is too low. Check the alternator pulley, if the flanges are worn and no longer flat, you must replace it as well.

There are tools to measure the tension, but your thumb also is a good one. If you can depress the belt approx. half an inch (middle) the tension is correct.

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, the belt was worn out. I replaced it with a new one and it stopped squealing :)

So as much as approx 12-13 mm is a correct tension? I think, without having measured it, that it became less than that.

I think half that for models with no a/c anyway the span the span is only about 350mm

Well, it seems I was being happy too soon since after driving some 150 km the squealing sound is there again. Maybe, like you wrote, the alternator pulley flanges too are worn out. But I do not understand what you mean with the flanges not being flat when worn? Do you mean that they could become "rounded" instead of sharp "V":s?
