Hi
I have a 10 plate Ducato Multijet 120 with 150K on clock.
It's driven like dream for a year but a few months ago started to smoke on starting, chugging and low power. EML came on sporadically. On restarting it often 'went away'. Twice it died on hills but eventually it powered up again.
First garage said EGR valve so had that changed, second garage said Turbo sticking and Throttle assembly corroded so had Turbo serviced and new Throttle assembly fitted. Ran great for a week then EML light and error codes for Air Flow Valve and Throttle Assembly. Took it back and once the error codes were removed it ran okay again, for another week! Then back to EML light and chugging.

The van is now in limp mode and not really drivable, but what I need is a proper diagnosis, any ideas would be gratefully received.

Hi Chris I had same probs with my 2.3 with only 22,000 miles, new injectors, throttle control valve, egr valve, maf sensor, cam shaft sensor and then I sent the ecu to the ecu doctor in Plymouth and they repaired it and returned it to me and my motorhome is now running like a dream after a waste of time and money spent on all the parts that Fial said it needed. If give the ecu doctor a call on 01752346437 they will give you free advice

often the process of undoing and re-making the connections to ECU can be all it needs,
COMMON issue on little petrols:(
 
Thanks John, I had my suspicions about the ecu as it seems so intermittent/electrical.
I'll let you know how I get on with the ECU Doctor.

My van has similar problems, maybe all MJ-120 suffer from it.
I invested 18 EURO in a mini ELM327 interface that allows you to monitor on your smartphone or laptop what is happening under the bonnet.
In my case the error is "boost pressure" when starting the engine, which is complete nonsense.
Once the light is turned on the engine management substitutes a "safe value" for a sensor input that is too high or too low. The result is an increase of fuel consumption of approx. 20%!
 
Check for water ingress / physical damage to the loom corroded connectors just start with the throttle valve connectors and trace the wiring back looking for damage. Check the earthstrap too.

Make sure they actually did replace the throttle valve with a new one and that its the new type with the actuator on the side a used one is just as likely to be duff.

CDK says it runs perfectly with the throttle valve disconnected so maybe try that to see if it stops the chugging until you get it fixed properly.
 
Just received the ODB2 interface ELM327 and observed engine performance on my smartphone.
There is 0.1 bar boost pressure at idle, 1.4 bar at 4000 rpm. Suddenly releasing the pedal shows vacuum for a few moments, then 0.1 bar again.
So the pressure/temp sensor in the intake manifold is toast! Buying a new one is easy, installing it will take the better part of a day. No tool can do that without first removing the whole throttle valve unit.
I also saw that the guys who changed the timing belt last year also reconnected the throttle valve and replaced the blocked EGR vacuum line with a new one. What I'm upset about is that they didn't ask of tell be about it.
 
Are you talking about Torque on android the displayed boost value is arrived at by subtracting the average air pressure at sealevel if you are in a low pressure you can get a negative value.

Yes, you are correct. But a positive value at idle is an error. The ECU thinks so too and shows the warning light. I can live with that but since it doesn't trust the sensor it makes my van very thirsty.
