Hi all,

hoping someone will instantly recognise the problem!
I have a Bessacarr motorhome on a 2011 Ducato. My side lights came on ok but after a few seconds the offside side lights, front and rear, go off and the dash warning lamp comes on. Turning them off again and back on, there is almost no delay, they go off. All the lamps, leds etc are ok because they all come on, initially. Any ideas, much appreciated.

The side lights, I think, are not fused, they go through the body ECU and when it sees a problem it shuts them down.

It is probably a bad connection with a bulb or the bulb is failing. The connection plug in the tail lights, if Fiat ones, can cause all sorts of issues try re-seating this and move bulbs to other side and see if problem moves.

Mike

Cheers Mike,
was beginning to think there was some kind of electronic intervention behind it, just odd that all the lamps do actually come on ok for a few seconds.
I'll get the trusty screwdriver out and have a prod about. Have to be a weekend job, not enough daylight hours!
Thanks again.

As mike says, if original rear lamps/wiring looms still fitted they were prone to earthing problems, the outer terminal (Earth) gets water in and corrodes, building resistance which in turn opens the female (loom) terminal up, if this is the issue you will see its burnt or corroded, open up the block connector, clean out the terminal while its out of the block, then crimp it closed so it will retain a good connection, clean the terminal on bulb holder, also check both sides, it's been known that for example l/h connector creates r/h light issues.

Also prone to water ingress down behind each headlamp, so might have to check wiring and connectors behind h/lamps

Thanks Rolopolo.
I think you are both right, its got to be a bad connection. Tried them again last night and after a few days dry weather, they stayed on much longer so probably want a bit of WD40 squirting in the right direction.
I dont know about original Fiat connectors, the rear light clusters are Swift and according to the manual they both connect to "Fiat Rear Light Connector Y203" wherever that is!
But you've given me some clues and I'll follow it up and let you know how I get on.
Cheers Guys.

Swift use two chassis, a Fiat one and Alko, my 2012 Bessacarr E584 is on an Alko chassis the Fiat wiring terminates in Fiat Y203 which in our case is in the end bathroom under the sink, from there on the wiring is Swift.

I forgot to mention that the wiring and electrics fromY203 onwards are made by Sargent Electrical, so I can only suggest that you start a thread in http://www.swift-talk.co.uk/forum and a tech from Sargent will get back to you.

Brilliant, thanks for that. I've got a rear bathroom too so will have a butchers in there.
Thanks for the link to the Swift forum. Whole mine of info out there obviously, if you know where to find it!

An update, having had the time to investigate yesterday.
The fault which was originally on the offside seemed to have cleared, but now the near side switched off after a minute or so (all lamps still lit ok initially).
Dropped both tail clusters off and inspected each lamp holder in turn.
Offside, found one lamp holder (indicator) with some obvious corrosion. Cleaned it up and applied WD40 to all lamp holders and push on terminals.
Nearside, no corrosion but some obvious moisture ingress in the reversing light lamp holder. Treated with WD40 and on both sides, used insulation tape to seal the rubber boots around the cables. Re-assembled and all ok!
So you guys were right, a fault on any lamp, no matter how minor, and you lose all of the lights on that side of the vehicle, with the exception of headlights and rear fogs I think. Potentially, I had no side lights because of an indicator and reversing light fault! Didnt manage to find the Y203 connector, but for now, dont seem to need to.
Thanks for all help.

Open the cabinet door under the sink and remove the shelf in the bottom of the cabinet, you will now see a relay, the control unit and the Y203 connector.

Did that, only plumbing in mine. There is a removable panel to the right of the cabinet, I think its access to the back of the shower so not the best place for electrics perhaps but nothing would surprise me! The vans nearly 9 metres long so it might be further in-board. No doubt I will come across it one day.
